The word "horla" (pronounced "orla"), although not a word in French, does have some interesting connotations to a French ear. "Hors" means outside, and "la" means simply "there"-so le (note the masculine gender) Horla sounds like the Outsider, the outer, the one Out There.

Period 2 -THE PRICE OF FLOWERS.

Period 2 :

Activity 1

Divide the story into comfortable areas.Say ,5 PARTS.

Encourage the student groups to find answers to the questions given there.

Let them discuss  the answers within the group.

The teacher moves around the groups to facilitate discussion.

Activity 2

Using these ideas , let each group present a summary of the part assigned to them.
 The teacher can make sure that a summary of the first part of the story is presented first,the summary of the second part next and so on...

Thus the whole story gets summarised in five paragraphs.

Activity 3

The copies of the write ups may be collected and all the students might be encouraged to read the collection.

Activity 4

1.While reading the summary, let them find out whether the story discusses any superstition .Ask them whether they believe in superstitions .

Assignment.

1.List out a few superstitions students come to know about in the society.

2. Can you spot out any other prejudice in this story ?

3.Do you think the title- the price of flowers- is suitable ?

4.Could you suggest another title for the story ?

Do you believe in superstitions ?
Do you think superstitions play a psychological role in the society ?
ACTIVITY 3
Read the story,'The Price of Flowers' and find out the superstition on which the entire story is centered on.( 1hr 30 minutes)

Output- let the students find out the superstition - crystal gazing.

ACTIVITY 4- DISCUSS the process of crystal gazing as appears in the story as a warm up for a WRITE UP

Assignment

Write a note on crystal gazing based on the story.
