Teaching intensive reading.

 Teaching intensive reading.

Reading has been defined as making sense of the printed word.  We read in order to get something from the text, whether it is a dictionary or a novel.  There must be a reason for reading.  We want to develop their intellectual capabilities while analyzing a text.  Traditionally reading has been divided into intensive and extensive.  Intensive reading focuses on a short text.  The aim is to help the students understand it by using a variety of skills.  Students are encouraged to work out, for example, how the writer has conveyed inference.  Further by focusing on a short text the students learn now to dissect it in order to understand the exact meaning.

In an intensive reading lesson students may be required to practice scanning and skimming skills.  Scanning a text is when a student reads very rapidly in order to find out a particular piece of information, a date for example.  It is also used to ascertain whether a text is useful for example whether the chapter contains relevant information for an essay. This can be done orally to encourage reading quickly.  Skimming a text is when students read for gist. Asking the class to find out what topics the text deals with ensure s fast reading.  Both skimming and scanning need practice.

To accomplish the goal the instructors focus on the process of reading rather than on its products.  For students to develop communicative competence in reading classroom and homework reading activities must resemble real life reading tasks that involve meaningful communication. The reading must me authentic in three ways. The reading material, purpose and approach must be authentic .Reading is an essential part of language instruction at every level because it supports learning in multiple ways. In short reading is an integral part of language learning linking into speaking, listening and writing.  It is essential that students enjoy the lessons so they are motivated to read thereby improving all aspects of their language skills.

TALES AFTER VACCINATION

A Shakespearean SCHOLAR came to get vaccinated.

*Nurse: Take arms but not against a Sea of trouble

SCHOLAR:Uneasy lies the arm that gets the jab.

Nurse:It is nobler in the mind to suffer

SCHOLAR:_To have or not to have the Second  jab is the question?

Nurse: It must follow as Night the Day

SCHOLAR: Hope it is not the unkindest cut of all

Nurse: A midsummer night's dream

SCHOLAR:_Parting is such Sweet Sorrow.Thank you.

BLURRED VISION

It happened yesterday!  Please be careful!

A friend had his 2nd injection of the vaccine at the vaccination center and began to have blurred vision the whole way home.

When he got home, he called the vaccination center for advice and to ask if he should go see a doctor, or be hospitalized.

He was told to go back to the vaccination center immediately to take back his own glasses and return the glasses of the nurse he had taken mistakenly.-
