Amazing English

WHEN BODY PARTS ARE USED AS VERBS

Many parts of the body can be used as verbs in either a physical or a metaphorical sense.

You can head a company, but if things go wrong you'll have to shoulder the blame, or face your investors.
A good leader will back his employees, but if you don't toe the line the management can skin you.
Did you muscle your way into that job?
You might eye someone suspiciously, or wait for the police to finger a suspect.
But if you need to get out of town, you can thumb a ride or you can ride with me if you can stomach the thought.
Use strong arm tactic if you want to elbow out someone.
I don't always sing along with the radio, but I sometimes do mouth the words.

That's Amazing English!

The consequences of our actions

A young man saw his primary school teacher on a wedding.
He went to greet him with all the respect and admiration.
He said to him:
"Do you remember me, Teacher?"
The teacher said: "No, introduce yourself."
The student said: "I was your student in the 3rd Grade, I am the one who stole the watch of a child in the classroom. I will remind you but I am sure you remember the story."

One of the boys in my class had a beautiful watch, so I decided to steal it.
He came to you crying that someone had stolen his watch.
You asked us to stand so as to search our pockets.
I realized that my action would be exposed in front of the Students and Teachers.
I will be called a thief, a liar and my character will be shattered forever.

You asked us to stand and face the wall and close our eyes completely.
You went searching from pocket to pocket, and when you reached my pocket you pulled the watch out of my pocket, and you continued until you searched the last student.

After you finished you asked us to open our eyes and to sit on our chairs.
I was afraid you will expose me in front of the students.

You showed the watch to the class, and gave it back to the boy, and you never mentioned the name of the one who stole the watch.
You never said a word to me, and you never mentioned the story to anyone.

Throughout my school life, none of the teachers nor the students talked about me stealing the watch.
I thought to myself you saved my dignity that day.

Do you remember me?
How can you not remember me, Teacher?
I was your student and I am sure you remember the story, that I stole the watch and you did not want to embarrass me. This story is unforgettable.

The teacher said: "I can't remember who stole the watch that day, because I searched the pockets of all of you while my eyes were also closed."

Education needs wisdom. We should be able to be such Teachers, such Parents, such Leaders and be able to be for people in such circumstances.
We should always calculate the consequences of our actions.- contributed by Sunil Jose

Effforts to build a cleaner and safer Delhi

Dear Radhakrishnan,
The pollution levels in Delhi continue to be a major cause of concern, and tackling it remains my top priority
Radhakrishnan, when I reached out to you 3 weeks back asking for your suggestions and ideas on how we can beat pollution, I knew we could fight pollution together!
I believe great things are in our future when citizens and government build a roadmap together. Thank you for your overwhelming response to our public consultation for #FightingPollutionTogether
I am happy to share that I have received over 300 petitions addressed to me by you and many other concerned citizens of Delhi, who have shared constructive suggestions and ideas on how to tackle pollution in this beloved city, which is our home.
Over the last 3 weeks, my team has been going through all your petitions, and taking your ideas up for further consideration. We are already working on organising a laser show to celebrate Diwali without crackers from 26-29 October at Connaught Place from 6 PM onwards, distributing high-quality N95 air masks and re-introducing the odd-even scheme to bring down vehicular pollution.
Many of you addressed the urgent need to increase and subsidise public transport facilities. I am happy to share that only yesterday I flagged off 100 new buses and over 4000 buses are under various stages of procurement. I am confident these buses will be added to Delhi’s public transport fleet over the next year.
I would like to assure you that some of the ideas you have put forth are already being implemented or will be rolled out in the near future.
Radhakrishnan, we are determined to build a cleaner and safer Delhi, and having your suggestions truly helps us do this, together
Wishing you and your family a happy, safe and green Diwali.
Thank you,
Arvind Kejriwal
Chief Minister, Delhi

Nobel Laurettes in literature 2018 2019

The Nobel Prize in Literature for 2018 is awarded to the Polish author
Olga Tokarczuk
“for a narrative imagination that with encyclopedic passion represents the crossing of boundaries as a form of life.

QUOTED FROM "THE WIRE"
Tokarczuk, whom the Academy described as the writer of works “full of wit and cunning”, is understood to have been the yearlong choice for 2018. She was, said the Academy, awarded the honour “for a narrative imagination that with encyclopaedic passion represents the crossing of boundaries as a form of life.”

Reports in the aftermath of the announcement describe Tokarczuk as the ultimate foil to the conservative upheaval in Europe. She is a noted feminist and an avowed liberal in her political outlook.

In 2018, she won the Man Booker International Prize for her novel Flights. She is the first Polish writer to have done so. Her novels are usually translated by Jennifer Croft or Antonia Lloyd-Jones.

Tokarczuk is the 15th woman to have won the literature Nobel.

***************************************************
The Nobel Prize in Literature for 2019 is awarded to the Austrian author
Peter Handke
“for an influential work that with linguistic ingenuity has explored the periphery and the specificity of human experience.
*************************************************
QUOTED FROM "THE WIRE"
The decision to pick Handke comes in the aftermath of the Academy’s promise to move away from the “Eurocentric and male-dominated” choices of earlier years. Handke is also infamous for his appearance at former Serbian and Yugoslavian president Slobodan Milošević’s funeral. Milošević was accused of war crimes at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia but died before the completion of his trial.

Handke, who stirred up a controversy with his opinions on the Yugoslav wars, is best known for The Goalie’s Anxiety at the Penalty Kick and Slow Homecoming.
