WHERE THE mind is without fear and the head is held high; Where knowledge is free; Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls; Where words come out from the depth of truth; Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection; ............................... Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action- Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.

POST EARLY FOR CHRISTMAS Brief Character Sketches by SAJEENA MADAM
POST EARLY FOR CHRISTMAS
I. Character Sketch
(1) Assistant
The young lady Assistant is the most important character in the play Post Early for Christmas. She is polite and gentle. She is not annoyed when the deaf old gentleman mistakes her words repeatedly. She is not angry even when her customers are angry at times. Quite often people mistake her Post Office foran animal clinic, bar or a chemist’s store. But she patiently handles the situations without any fuss. She is punctual in her work. She believes in posting early for Christmas. She is concerned about her customers. She is reasonable and accountable. She has high moral obligation. When her customer’s parcel is damaged she feels responsible for the mishap and leaves the job. Thus the Assistant is a memorable character in the whole play.

COMPARISON BETWEEN MENDING WALL AND GITANJALI BY SAJEENA SHUKKOOR
COMPARISON BETWEEN MENDING WALL AND GITANJALI
Mending Wall and Gitanjali are the two poems which deal with lofty thoughts and sublime themes. Robert Frost’s ‘Mending Wall’ is a dramatic narrative poem composed in blank verse.
It reflects on the man-made barriers prevalent in the contemporary society. Tagore’s Gitanjali in eight lines represent the walls which narrow man’s mind within a shell.

HOW TO DEAL WITH SLOW LEARNERS ?
How to teach the slow learners (in higher secondary) English ?
When one of my colleagues raised this question, silence was the major response from the teachers who had gathered there from the different parts of the educational district as part of a cluster meeting of the higher secondary teachers on 25/01/2017.
Perhaps most of the teachers chose to keep quiet as they might have thought the question out of context. We were discussing the new education policy that is being introduced in Kerala from 2016-2021.During the discussion I was pointing out that there are problems in our English classes which should be discussed in the clusters. One such problem is the presence of many students who are slow learners .Students who have no basics of the language and who can't learn in a usual class room .I cited an example of a student who told me after my class that he was so upset with his predicament during my class that he had always been waiting for the class to be over anyhow !
I requested the group to discuss how we might address this issue. It was then one of the senior teachers pointed out that the problem is that we , English teachers are not using English in our classrooms and then how can we expect the students to grasp the language. Then she invited me to speak how I had been dealing with them !
My reply was that one thing I had been trying is that I would give the slow learners a chance to respond to a learning challenge providing multiple choices -three or four- instead of asking a direct question in the class.
When the student comes out with -at least- a part of the sentence, I will accept it or modify it as the situation demanded.
Then I told the meeting that there could be other techniques which I would like to hear from my friends.
Then Vinayarajan master came out with suggestion of equipping the teachers with IT skills so that they would be able to teach effectively in a high tech class. Thus the discussion digressed to the topic of smart classrooms , the need for teachers to undergo training in handling the required equipments and planning for such IT enabled classes.
The question I put forward remains unanswered.Hence the discussion continues..........
How can we make the slow learners feel interested in an English class ?.Please join in the discussion.

The importance of a lighter approach in life( A brief review of block 5 /12 reader /dhse ) )
The importance of a lighter approach in life( A brief review of block 5 /12 reader /dhse ) )
Sporting a sense of humour can make things easy for us.
The play 'Post Early for Christmas' tells us about taking a lighter approach in life. The lady assistant finds herself in big trouble towards the end of the play but she does not show any fear at all. Instead she makes a loud declaration that she is leaving the job because she dislikes it. It is better to be with animals than with the foolish costumers who turn up at the post office with silly remarks .This is a brave attempt to face the unexpected challenges that life throws out.
The poem "This is going to hurt a little bit" is also an attempt to alleviate the pain felt at a dentist's room with the help of a humorous analysis of the situation.
Again the story " Crime and Punishment " points out how badly a teacher fails to rise to the occasion when a child persists on making mistakes deliberately. A lighter response would have helped him to avoid the predicament of having to dance to the tunes of a kid. He could have asked a different but simple question (Now ,tell me what is 8 multiplied by 3 ! ; perhaps to suit the answer "24"). Or he could have confessed to the parents about the mistake he had committed .
Life is all about having different perspectives and taking a lighter approach while facing a problem.-
