MY VISION OF A NEW INDIA ( 11 ENGLISH )
Tips to write AN ARTICLE /A SPEECH on MY DREAM OF A NEW INDIA based on gandhian values ( 11 READER-THEN GANDHI CAME -ACTIVITY 3)
Important ideas from the outgoing president's speech
1.A modern nation is built on some essential fundamentals -democracy or equal rights for all,secularism or equal freedom to faith to all,equality of every religion and economic equity.
2.For development to be real,the poorest shall feel that they are a part of the narrative .(This echoes Mahatma Gandhi who wrote as.. I SHALL WORK FOR AN INDIA IN WHICH EVEN THE POOREST SHALL FEEL THAT IT IS THER COUNTRY-CKR)
3. The soul of India resides in pluralism and tolerance.
4. The capacity for compassion and empathy is the true foundations of our civilisation.
5.Gandhiji saw India as an inclusive nation where every section of our population lived in equality and enjoyed equal opportunity.
6. He wanted our people to move forward unitedly in ever-widening thought and action.(influence of Tagore-CKR )
7. Financial inclusion is at the core of an equitable society. We must empower the poorest of the poor and ensure that the fruits of our policies reach the last person in the line.
8.To lead healthy, happy and productive lives is the basic right of our citizens.
9.The quest for happiness is closely tied to the quest for sustainable development, which is the combination of human well-being, social inclusion and environmental stability
10.A sustainable environment would prevent damage to the planetary resources. Social inclusion would ensure access to the fruits of progress to all.
12.A reordering of society is possible through the transformative power of education. For that, we have to upgrade our higher institutions of learning to world-class levels.
13. Our universities should not be a place for rote-memorising but an assembly of inquisitive minds. Creative thinking, innovation and scientific temper have to be promoted in our institutions of higher learning. It calls for application of logic through discussion, argument and analysis. These qualities have to be cultivated and autonomy of mind has to be encouraged

Fellow citizens, during my five years in Rashtrapati Bhavan, we tried to build a humane and happy township. We found happiness that is associated with joy and pride, smiling and laughter, good health, feeling of safety and positive actions. We learnt to wear a smile always; to laugh at life; to connect with nature and get involved with the community. And then, we extended our experience to a few villages in the neighbourhood. The journey continues

EMPOWERMENT BEGINS AT HOME
It
is a fact that a woman is the central figure of the family. She does
all the work. She does all the washing, cooking, cleaning and so on .
She is doomed to do all the work, including those
of the
menial
ones such that she does not have the time to do anything else. She
does not have the chance to work outside her home and earn money for
herself. She has no opportunity to realise her potential. It is all
because of the multitude of work she has in her family. Even women
employed outside their homes face difficulty to continue work due to
this. This has to be changed. The chores should be shared in a
family. It is the first lesson of empowerment. A woman can learn,
work and take leadership only if the work done by her in her family
is reduced. Only then shall she attain empowerment.

HIGHER SECONDARY STUDENTS MUST READ NEWSPAPERS IN ENGLISH EVERY DAY;BUT ARE THEY READING ?
Most of the questions in the public examination demand the students of higher secondary to prepare reviews of films,news reports ,editorials,letters to editors based on contemporary social issues.In order to excel in these exams students must make it a habit to read the English dailies.But are they reading ?My experience is that they are not.
I have made several attempts to help them read good English by making the newspapers available in the campus since early morning.I have told them that they need not read all the things published in a news paper. They might start reading the sports columns ,then interesting news reports, advertisements on job vacancies and then the editorial page.I have been trying to initiate discussions by taking a copy to the classroom and there were batches of students who indulged in serious reading and responded to the news items meaningfully until a few years ago.But recently I find that students can't read and understand most of the news items as they have never got a chance to read English dailies.So I have to read out the news items aloud first and then explain the ideas in simple English or some times in Malayalam and then initiate discussions.This takes a major part of the class time and hence can not be done every period.
Another method I tried last year was to design a quiz every day based on the day's news items.Some students showed interest in the beginning but eventually they gave up.Students have subscribed to newspapers in English during previous years but they have never tried to read seriously.I have found the students sitting on the newspapers,using them to clean the desks or to collect and sell in bundles on a monthly basis but never to read meaningfully.
How can we make them read effectively is one topic which needs immediate responses from the teachers.One thing I have noticed is that the recent change in time table restricting the school days in the higher secondary section to 5 days a week and the 10 period structure from 9 am to 4.30 pm every day has negatively affected language learning too.There is no time to take rest and read. There is no provision for morning gatherings, after lunch meetings or afternoon sessions for club activities which was done at least once a week during previous years.All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. This seems to be true in the case of every higher secondary student ! During this week for reading at least we should think seriously about initiating effective reading among the students .
