MAGGIE'S MOTHER AS A SUCCESSFUL PARENT

A PARAGRAPH ON MAGGIE;S MOTHER IN THE STORY "THE PRICE OF FLOWERS " (11 READER FOR ENGLISH,DHSE,KERALA )

( WITH SELF LEARNING TOOLS )

MAGGIE'S MOTHER is an old widow .Her financial status is not good but she  is not frustrated .
She lives in a small but clean cabin in a street in London and  makes a living by making and selling cakes .She worries about her missing son.She along with Maggie receives the writer with great warmth and courtesy. The scenes where we see Maggie playing Scotland Blues in violin reveal the cultural tradition of the family.Poverty doesn't make them behave meanly. She  does not resort to any negative ways of life to overcome the miseries of poverty and loneliness. She can be hailed as  a successful parent because she  has helped Maggie grow up as an enthusiastic and independent individual in spite of the challenges she had to face in life. The mother's life had never been pleasant. She was always anxious of her son ,Frank. Her son  had been missing for a long time and they had  not heard  anything abut her for long. She wanted to know whether he was alive or not.Being poor and lonely she had no other options to get in touch with him  who had been in the frontiers of India as a soldier. She hopes to find an Indian who could   gaze through the ring to check whether frank is alive or not. Here she and her daughter is somewhat superstitious . When the writer tells the truth that he couldn't see anything , the mother gets depressed and soon she becomes sick.
Once more Maggie compels the writer to gaze through the magic ring and tell a lie.The writer tells them that he could see her son alive through the magic ring. The mother feels relaxed and she recovers soon. But the sad news arrives about the death of  Frank and the family bereaves his death. The mother of Maggie in the story "The Price of Flowers "is presented as  a bold character who faces the ups and downs of life with hope and confidence.
