ANY WOMAN -Poem by KATHARINE TYNAN :A Short Note
“Any Woman” written by Katharine Tynan , an Irish poet, speaks about the role of a mother. The sentiments of a mother expressed here by a mother poet about her part in a family is true in every place and time.
In this poem the poet says about the importance of a mother in a family. She is the keystone of the house. If something happens to her, the poet warns, the whole family will be ruined. Children live because of the warmth of mothers' love. She walls all dangers and protects her family from 'wind and snow' which stands for external forces trying to harm the family.
In the last part of the poem the mother makes her humble wish to live long enough to see her children grow. She is selfless enough to think of her young ones.
Indeed she is the pillar of house without which it is certain the house – family – will fall apart. Now a days the presence of a mother in a family is rarely noticed. She is considered only as a machine who never gets tired of anything. She is neglected and confined within the four walls her house. This poem demands all readers to open their eyes to be considerate towards a woman's inner feelings and to regard her as an individual.
This poem 'Any Woman' presents the all-embracing power of a woman to hold her family together. The mother figure in the poem and her private emotions are presented through a lot many metaphorical images such as pillars, keystone, fire on the hearth, light, etc. Except for the first stanza the rhyme scheme in the poem is to be identified to be ab, ab, cd, cd, ..... .

Good work.It helps a lot.
In the first stanza, 3rd and 4th lines, what do the words 'ruin me' mean?
Does it mean ruin the home or mother?
'Take me away, and roof and wall
Would fall to ruin me utterly'
'Me' stands for mother ?

I heard this poem read today (26/6/05) on Poetry Please on BBC Radio 4 and shed a few tears at the simple unassuming beauty of the sentiments it expresses which so closely mirror those of my own wife for our two beautiful children. She is indeed the pillars of the house without which it would fall into ruins.
A very beautiful poem in praise of motherhood.

focus on the line
She is indeed the pillars of the house without which it would fall into ruins. This is the concept the poet would have had in her mind while creating those lines.

So it is clear that me in the third line is mother and me in the fourth line is the house/(the family/home).I think it is a deliberate pun employed by the poet to stress the fact that mother is the house or the family. There is no home ,without the mother -CKR
Well explained the connotation of 'me'....thanks Radhakrishnan sir..
very good explanation. here mother is the house(family/home) or main structure of a family
I appreciate you on your effort....thank u sir
so mother is a moving home within the home. a bigger home within the walled house
thanks a million
good effort.
i think the crux of the theme lies in the last two lines. * Thou who a woman laid in a manger, Tame me not till the children grow".
this is the only prayer the mother places before God.
This idea can be compared with " Thank god the scorpion picked on me and spared my children"- the lines from Night of the scorpion by Nissim Eziekel,
A Womans Worth
She gave life. She is a wife.
She is a mother and she is a friend.
She is a sister a survivor to the end.
Appreciate her, we don't dare.
Ask her worries, we don't care.
Wipe away her tears, they are invisible as air.
She works cooks and clean.
She laughs, helps comfort, and hides her pain.
When you struggle she pulls you through
All this is she and what do we do?
Complain and create a mess.
Provide stress and leave her feeling depressed..
Push her away and ignore her advice.
Tell her she is nothing without thinking twice.
She was raped tortured and abused.
Told she was nothing and would always be used just for pleasure forget her pain.
She swallows her pride, put her feelings aside.
Does as you need in order for you to be free.
Ignores your ignorance and tolerates your flaws.
You call her Bitch, Slut, Hoe and Tramp
She answers with pride dignity and a complete loss of self.
You call her nothing.
I call her Strong, Smart, Sensual, Caring, Giving, Surviving, Tolerant and powerful
I call her WOMAN!
I appreciate this effort. feeling great after reading the comments.. But let me express my doubt regarding the rhyme scheme, it is abab, why do you extend it to cdcd... ???
I wanna thankyou all my friendssssss....
For helping me to... My exams :)
ANY WOMAN is a poem that celebrates womanhood as the supreme example of love, kindness,
and being considerate,decisive,disciplined,erudite,efficient,faithful,industrious,focussed,nurturing,persevering,resourceful,responsible,tolerant,warm,vital,patient,determined and devoted.
What poet ment by scared ring, close tether in the poem?
Dear Shaheer,if you read the poem again carefully ,you can find that it is not the scared ring, but it is the sacred ring and you will get the meaning.Tether means rope.
I have another point to add regarding the usage of "me". If a family loses its stability and falls, the responsibility of the fall comes to the shoulder of woman. She has to bear all the responsibilities.Everyone around criticize her which can ruin her completely.
Is there usage of poetic device allusion in the line
"thou whom a woman laid in a manger"
Thanks for providing good thoughts. 👏👏
Not mother but it signifies the home or the family.😊
