Those who lack the confidence ,do not dare. So building confidence in women is essential. This is the role of education and that’s why Christine Lagarde calls it as the foundation of development. Compulsury and free education must be given to every child in our Nation.

“Women some times lack confidence to match their competence.”It is a true statement.Women in our place are competent to take various roles in our society. In most families in India,all the unpleasant tasks are assigned to  the women.They do all the cooking,cleaning,washing and other chores.Still many  of them are not coming forward to take up top jobs .instead they keep themselves to their comfort zones.If they have more confidence the situation might change.

Empowerment can change  women and build confidence in them.

SPEECH BY HON'BLE PRESIDENT OF INDIA, SMT. PRATIBHA DEVISINGH PATIL, AT THE 17TH CONVOCATION OF MOTHER TERESA WOMEN'S UNIVERSITY

Dear Students,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am delighted to participate at the 17th Convocation of Mother Teresa Women's University. I am greatly honoured by the University's decision to confer an Honorary D. Litt. Degree on me. It imposes a greater responsibility on me to further the cause of women's education and empowerment - a cause close to my heart.

Mother Teresa Women's University was established in 1984, in the presence of Mother Teresa, a legend of our times, a humanitarian par-excellence and Nobel Laureate for Peace. It is an unique educational institution devoted solely to women's causes, and seeks to empower women, especially poor and marginalized women through education.

This University has a noble mission and it must work tirelessly for educating women, equipping them with the skills and knowledge that will enable them to be productively employed and to serve the nation as well as humanity at large. A university is a sacred place where knowledge is imparted, values instilled in the youth and where they can seek intellectual pursuit. I am reminded of the words of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, when describing the role of Universities he said, and I quote, "A university stands for humanism, for tolerance, for reason, for progress, for the adventure of ideas and for the search for truth. It stands for the onward march of the human race towards even higher objectives. If universities discharge their duty adequately, then it is well with the nation and the people. But if the temple of learning itself becomes a home of narrow bigotry and petty objectives, how then will the nation prosper or a people grow in stature?" I am confident that Mother Teresa Women's University will be inspired and guided by the words of Pandit Nehru and will strive hard for academic excellence, personality development of women and giving women the skills and capabilities to lead meaningful lives.

One of the hallmarks of our freedom movement was the emphasis on the emancipation of women. Mahatma Gandhi encouraged women to play an active role in public affairs, he said and I quote "There is no occasion for women to consider themselves subordinate or inferior to men� Woman is the companion of man, gifted with equal mental capacity.... If by strength is meant moral power, then a woman is immeasurably man's superior."

It is true that the emancipation and empowerment of women was one of the important guiding principles of our national freedom movement. We have achieved some success but still have a long way to go in fully realizing this idea. In fact a paradox of sorts exists as far as women in India are concerned. On the one hand, women have established that they can undertake all types of missions and work - whether it be scaling the Himalayas, going into space, serving in the Armed Forces and Police, being administrators and diplomats, managing multinational companies or small businesses, joining professions like medicine engineering or teaching. On the other hand, it is equally true that women face numerous challenges and discrimination emanating from social prejudices. They are victims of violence and physical abuse. Regrettably there has been a rise in crimes against women and families worry about the lack of security for their women. I hope we can all join hands and work together to make it safer and more secure for girls at college and women at work. Empowering women will require a multi-pronged approach. A three E-approach - enabling environment, education and equality - would be very useful.

The Government has put in place legislation to protect women against domestic violence and from sexual harassment at the workplace and to give Hindu women inheritance rights in co-parcenary property. A major initiative taken in 1992 was the reservation of one-third of seats for women in the urban and local self-governments. As a result, 1.2 million women at the grassroots level have been brought into political decision-making. Women's participation at the gram panchayat levels was an important step towards social, economic and political empowerment of women.

Legislative and administrative initiatives to empower our women are necessary and important, but not enough. We also need a fundamental change in our mindsets. We need a new social reform movement for gender equality and empowerment of our women - a movement that changes society's attitude towards women. Grassroots women's movements can be the most vocal champions of women's empowerment. Self-Help Women Groups in India have made a significant impact on the economic empowerment of rural women. The efforts of civil society and women's groups must continue. They should be made partners in programmes for women upliftment.

The worst manifestation in our country of gender discrimination is female foeticide. Unfortunately, female foeticide is committed not only by the illiterate and the impoverished, it is being committed in cities and among the educated and well-to-do. It is shocking that there are higher incidents of female foeticide in the more developed districts and regions of our country. Society has to be made aware that a girl child is a boon and a gift.

The first step towards ending such discrimination against girls and women is education. In the preference for sons over daughters, women and girls are given limited opportunities in education and work. This approach needs to be altered. We have to increase the enrollment of girls at school. We have to vastly improve female literacy. Educated women can help in women literacy programmes. They can also contribute by helping other women, who are not so fortunate to have been educated, in making them socially aware. I suggest that every student should be given field exposure in rural areas to propagate about women education, status of women and against social evils. Such social awareness campaigns, like NSS volunteers help not only in the social but also the economic advancement of the country.

I also believe that women who wish to pursue studies should be supported through scholarships and with easy loan facilities from banks. This financial support is necessary for increasing education of women at the higher levels. Women should also be encouraged to build entrepreneurship as a career option and to look at self-employment options. Specialized training programmes, including vocational training centers for women should be started in every State. Similarly, schemes for making loans available to women for establishing their own businesses would be very useful.

It is equally important for women to be motivated to fight discrimination and to march towards equal status. They should work determinedly for their own empowerment that would give them the confidence to face the challenges of life. One important step in this direction is imparting physical education - like Judo, Karate - for self-defence to girl students from a very early age so as to make them physically strong and to build-up their confidence. Self-defence is the best defence. Now-a-days a large number of women are joining the police force. Those who needed protection earlier are now giving protection to others. It is a big change.

Subramaniya Bharathi, the great poet and freedom fighter, would emphasize that women of excellence do not falter from the chosen path. Enlightened women are very important for nation building since their thoughts and value systems will lead to the development of a good family, a good society and a good nation. Moreover, women can contribute greatly to building a compassionate world. There are many sick, needy and poor who need our love and support. We need to understand the sufferings of others. Educated women can take the lead in building a compassionate society and a more tolerant world. This reminds me of a poem I studied in school:

“If all the trees were one tree, what a great tree it would be;

If all rivers were one river, what a great river it would be.

If all women in the world joined their voices together;

What a great voice it will be to bring peace, prosperity and happiness in the world.”

I am reminded of the words of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru at a university

 I feel one of the noble missions of a university is to work tirelessly for educating women, equipping them with skills and knowledge that will enable them to be productively employed and to serve the nation as well as humanity at large.

NOTE- A REVIEW OF THE SPEECH

THE 3 LS OF EMPOWERMENT

“The 3Ls of Empowerment” is a speech done by Christine Lagarde the first woman Finance Minister of France. She exhorts us to take the challenges of the 21st century.

She underlines the importance of women’s empowerment. She identifies the economic role of women. At the same time she wonders at the plight of women. According to her women should be given equal opportunity. He feels disturbed at the modern- scenario. He says today women are blocked to contribute their talents. Women are denied equal opportunity. According to her a concerted effort will surely open the door to opportunity. She strongly recommends the 3Ls of women’s empowerment. They are learning, labour and leadership. She believes in the power of educating women. It will enable them to realize their power and break the chains of discrimination.

Next the speaker is confident of the labour to achieve women- empowerment. But she is not optimistic with today’s economic- scenario. Women are getting low payment, low status and low security jobs. She emphasizes an immediate change. The prime objective should be equal pay for equal work. She hopes for a change by eliminating gender gaps. She is optimistic that this would promote an increase in per capita income.

Finally the speaker points out that leadership is another important thing in empowering women. She firmly believes that leadership will enable them to rise and fulfill their inborn abilities and talents. It will really help them to fulfil their ambitions lin life. She is optimistic in women’s power of making good decisions with common agreement and long-term sustainability.

She concludes her speech emphasizing the fact that women must have confidence to come out of their comfort- zone. She should be ready to face any challenges and make difference in the society. She is really positive-minded to dream a world where women will reap the benefits with the above 3Ls of empowerment.

Dear friends,

GOODMORNING TO ALL ,LADIES AND GENTLEMEN ALIKE ,ON THIS DAY,8TH OF MARCH , WHICH IS OBSERVED AS INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR WOMEN.

If you educate a boy, you  train a man. If you educate  a girl, you  train a village.

This ADAGE tells us a serious truth.

Education of women  is really pivotal. Then you will ask me ,”But…Aren’t girls getting education in  India ?”

Yes.Most of them have a chance to step into the primary schools. Then many of them are forced to discontinue learning  or disappear forever. The plight of the medical student Nirbhaya in Delhi speaks nothing else.

It is a mindboggling fact  that even in this modern era, women in India  face a lot of challenges.

We have heard a lot about the Nirbhaya documentary. No one would forget the sufferings of Jyoti Singh in Delhi. What caused the miseries of that poor girl ?

The documentary –they say-points out that  she was punished for venturing outside the house at night !

A woman should not behave like this !She should not have done like that !

Dear friends, This is the mindset  of the  majority of Indians.

We don’t have a concept of equality for women .The women in India are treated like lesser human beings. The women in India are marginalized, sidelined, humiliated, and shunned away from public spheres.

They are not given any top jobs.

You may speak about Kiran Bedi.

but how many Kiran bedis, do we have in india ? Not many.

How many women get recognition like Smitha Patil ? Only a few.

How many of them get elevated to the ranks of Indira Gandhi ?  Still only a few.

And why do women lag behind ? Why do women get killed even before coming out of their mother’s womb ? Even the parents are prejudiced against them.

Dear friends, if you have a vision that our  India must shine as  a great Nation,you have an uphill task here.

Come down to the ground realities.

Most women in India do not have access to higher education.

Most women in India can not claim equal  rights to their ancestral property.

Most women in India do not have any role in decision making. Not in their state.Not in their village.Not in their family.

Most women in India are not paid well though they are made to toil for hours like slaves.

Is this good for the development of our Nation ? No.

When women are not paid well,50 percent of Indians are not paid well.That will affect our ecomomy.

When women are disrespected,humiliated or exploited, a major chunk  of Indians are disrespected ,humiliated or exploited .That will affect our pride and unity.

That’s why we speak about supporting women. Empowering women. That is what we need now. For women empowerment, there are three requisites according to Christine Lagarde-learning,labour and leadership.

.Yes.The chairperson of the IMF  is right.

Education is the first and the foremost factor of women empowerment. If a girl is educated, she will have confidence. She will have employable skills.
Community groups like Kudmubasrees will enhance their financial status. Entrepreneurship will lead them to power.
Employment will make her stronger and daring to take up new challenges in the workplace. 

She can leave her comfort zone now and fly high like a bird.

They –I mean, the educated women-will become team leaders with the right mindset and making the right decisions at the right time.

Education can change the mindset.

This is what our country needs now. The right mindset. Compassion for the weaker section. Ensuring equality for men and women.  Strengthening  women empowerment.

This change will make India a heaven of freedom , equality and growth as great poets like Tagore had envisioned.

Education for women-qualty education for all women- is the key to WOMEN EMPOWERMENT .

 As Malala Yousafzai ,the Nobel prize winner for Peace this year says,

One pen ,one book and  one teacher can change the world…of women.

True, the family umbrella supports women empowerment. The husband protects the family, leads the family and provides the family. The wife comforts, teaches and natures. And the children loves parents and obeys parents 

     Family is important because it provides love, support and a framework of values to each of its members. Family umbrella teach each other, serve one another and share life's joys and sorrows. From their first moment's of life, children depend and provide for their needs. Family umbrella are very important components of society and people's lives. They teach us a lot about life and relationships. They love us and treat us valuably. They boost over self confidence and make us feel  valued. A family is one of the greatest gift god has given to all living creatures on the earth including humans.

     Women empowerment refers to making women powerful to make decisions for them, women empowerment came in like a breath of fresh air. It made them aware of their rights and how they must make their own place in society rather than depending on a man. It recognized the fact that things cannot simply work in someone's favour because of their gender. However, we still have along way to go when we talk about the reasons why we need it.

     Females empowerment is associated with economic development, but cash transfers targeted at women may have unintended consequences.

     Successful economic development starts with decisions made within families. Improving the education and skills of the population, known as 'human capital', is a central factor in development in large part, human capital depends on decisions made by parents, such as how many children to have, whether to send children to work or to school, and how much effort and money to put into their education. Physical capital is another critical factor for development. Again, families make the decisions on how much to save and consume that will ultimately determine the capital stock. 

     There a good reasons to believe that empowering women helps economic development. Reducing discrimination in access to education and the labour market would make better use of women's skills and abilities. 

     Getting families to 'do the right thing' is therefore important for development policy. How can this be done? According to recent conventional wisdom, the answer is to put women in charge.

A warm good morning to one and all. Respected principal, teachers and my dear friends,

"If you educate a boy, you train a man. If you educate a girl, you train a village." But are the women of our country India getting enough and good education? Are they enjoying freedom and equality? Are they empowered in all sense? Without thinking much we can say no. I think this is the right time to think about these issues as today is March 8, International Women's Day.

We all may have different dreams about our country India. Me too have a dream about a developed India where all the women enjoy equality, freedom and have greater access to education. As said by the famous economist Christine Lagarde in her speech, women empowerment is directly linked to economic growth of the world. The factors which are necessary for women empowerment are 'Learning, Labour and Leadership'.

Learning or education is the first step up on which any change is built. It helps women to help themselves and to know about their rights, through which they can make changes.

Labour is the second step which helps women to expand and achieve their true ability. But they face a lot of problems at work place, like low wages, low status and low security. One of our most important norms should be "equal pay for equal work".

The third one is leadership which enables women to rise and fulfil their abilities. We have so many examples of empowered women. For example, Mother Teresa, Mary Kom, Madam Curi etc.

Dear friends, let us try to inculcate equality, freedom and education to women of our country. For this, women should be ready to dare the difference. They should step out from their comfort zones. The society has a wrong prejudice about women that, they are the one meant only to the kitchen. We should prove this wrong by educating women, which is the first step of making changes. Education is the key to success. Education is the light to remove darkness thereby removing ignorance.

MALALA YOUSAF ZAI, , is a great example of what education and courage can do with women. . She says that one student, one teacher, one school, one book and a pen can change the whole world. We will realise the importance of light when there is darkness. We will realise the importance of voice when there is silence. We will realise the importance of education when we see guns and weapons'.

Dear friends, now is the time to make changes. Now is the time to take initiative . As students we also can support and work hard for women empowerment. As  citizens of India, it is our responsibility to provide basic facilities of education to our sisters and daughters. Let us work together for a developed India, where women enjoy equality and freedom.

RESPECTED PRINCIPAL, TEACHERS AND MY DEAR FRIENDS,

As we all know, today, March 8, is the International Women’s
day. All over the world, the day is observed to ensure that
women have an equal share in developmental activities. In
India economists, scientists, -each and everyone- are trying to
make India developed. And, still India is crawling without
development. India cannot  attain development @ 2020 if
everything goes like this. Why ? Because of the lack o
EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN.

India is one of the countries who consider women as second
class. India is one of the countries where a woman is
discriminated. We still have the dowry system. Female foeticide
is common. Although these are prohibited by law, they still go
on in our society.

Women empowerment is the key factor of development.
Recent researches show that elimination of gender gap in
economic participation can bring an increase in per
capita income.

We are celebrating MALALA DAY to support Malala . But Malala
says it is the day of everyone who raise their voice for their
rights and education. There are many women who struggle for
their rights and education. The life of an Indian woman
generally speaking is a series of slaveries. Until she is married
she is a slave of her husband and when she gets married she
becomes a slave of her husband and when the husband dies
she is a slave of her son whom she chooses to depend on.

This condition must be changed. As Christine Lagard says the
3L’s- LEARNING, LABOUR, and LEADERSHIP . The adage
that “IF YOU EDUCATE A BOY YOU TRAIN A MAN. IF YOU
EDUCATE AWOAN YOU TRAIN A VILLAGE” also points outthe importance of education for woman. Weakness, fear,
hopelessness must not rule the woman. But strength, hope, and
courage must rule them. This could be acquired through the
education.

The proverb “PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN SWORD”.
Is relevant here. The right education at right time will help
women to face challenges.

Learning helps women to know their rights and duties. Labour
or employment gives her the economic power to assert herself.
A woman without any income has to depend her father,
husband or her son for her needs. Leadership makes the
women powerful. She should be able to lead so that the world
become a better place to live in. Lagard says that women can
be better leaders than men. Women tend to make decisions
based on consensus building, inclusion, compassion and
sustainability.

For this women need the key called education. As George
Washington said, “EDUCATION IS THE KEY TO UNLOCK THE
GOLDEN DOOR OF FREEDOM”. For this , women must be
shielded with unity and empoerment . They must reject
prejudices of cast, sex, religion and colour. They must rely on
their potential.

And now it is the time to start or to continue our journey for
women education. It is true that sometimes women lack the
confidence to their competence. They have to change their
mindset .They should be ready to “dare the difference” to
take risk and step out of their comfort zones. I , therefore ,ask
the girls assembled here to take charge of their lives. You have
a lot to gain and nothing to lose by trying to make yourself
equal to men. “One child, one teacher, one book and one
pen can change the world. So education first ”.

They are women leaders , famous for their POSITIVE achievements in various fields. Smita Patil was a great actress and a leader of parallel cinema in India. Helen Boaden is the director of BBC news group. Mary com is an Olympian who has won  medals for India in boxing. J K Rowling  is a renowned writer of Harry Potter books. When we study all these personalities ,it becomes evident that  women can be trendsetters in the world. They could achieve great things in life because of some fine qualities like higher education, the ability to take up challenges in life, confidence and resilience. But we don’t see many women as successful as these persons.

1.YES.Women take different roles at home and outside.In most families in India,all the unpleasant tasks are assigned to  the women.They do all the cooking,cleaning,washing and other chores.Still they are not given equal status .

2.Women in India face a lot of challenges. They are marginalized in our society .They have less access to family funds. They save no access to higher education. They don’t have safety and freedom in our public spaces .The girl children are considered a burden to society. Most of the women in India have no access to top jobs.

3.Some of them like Mary com  are equipped to face these challenges. So many women are not.They are not educated.They don’t have confidence.Lack of funds is another issue.To face these challenges women need confidence and support from the society.Building this confidence and providing the required support is what we call as Women empowerment.

MATERIALS SUPPLIED TO STUDENT GROUPS.

The world is rapidly changing.Families and the role of women and men are also changing.Families are a key building block of society without which communities and economics could not function.Progress is notable on women's increased access to resources , through earned income,social protection ,and asset ownership.This has triggered some shifted in the balance of power within the family,giving them more decisions making opportunities.

                           I don't believe that  men are supposed to protect family ,lead the family and provide for the family while women are supposed to nurture ,comfort and teach.I don't .......I believe that both women and men are supposed to do both the categories of work of the family .These are women who work in the highest positions of companies whose husbands help them in household works.Both husbands and wife are supposed to adjust and ( make  ) sacrifices for a healthy family.

                 Women more than men adjust their careers for family .This is because they are considered to look after their children 24/7. This is where women empowerment should start. It is not that men don't want to sacrifice their work.It is the society which make them believe that men are supposed to be the powerful one in the family. So men should work and women should sit in their houses looking after the children

3LS OF EMPOWERMENT- NOTES BY DR.SAJEENA SHUKKOOR

1. The role of educated empowered women in building a strong nation.

Education is the foundation upon which any change is built. It helps women
to help themselves and break the shackles of exclusion. Women represent
half the world’s population. But they contribute far less than 50 per cent of
economic activity. In some countries, per capita income lags significantly
because women are denied equal opportunity. Numerous studies show that
illiterate women have high levels of fertility and mortality, poor nutritional
status, low earning potential, and little autonomy within the household. A
woman’s lack of education also has a negative impact on the health and well
being of her children. For instance, a recent survey in India found that infant
mortality was inversely related to mother’s educational level. Women are
more likely to spend their resources on health and education, creating a
powerful ripple effect across society and across generations. One study
suggests that women invest up to 90 percent of their earnings this way, as
opposed to just 30-40 percent by men. Thus education and empowerment of
women can work wonders in building a strong nation.

2. The role of learning, labour and leadership skills in making a woman
liberated.

Education is the foundation upon which any change is built. It helps women
to help themselves and break the shackles of exclusion. Labour facilitates
women to flourish and achieve their true potential. It helps women to
become independent, bold and resourceful. Leadership enables women to
rise and fulfill their innate abilities and talents. Here there is plenty of room
for improvement.

3. Women should step outside their comfort zones. Discuss.

When women lead , they  do  jobs in a better way . They are more likely to make decisions based on consensus building,inclusion, compassion and with a focus on long term sustainability. Butwomen sometimes lack the confidence to match their competence. So they need to change that mindset and reset the narrative in their favour. Some women though educated and qualified for a job tend to be comfortable with child bearing and child rearing. They feel happy inside the home and never step out to express their talents. Their talents cannot be tapped in this context. Some women become satisfied with a small job though they are
capable of more competent job.This is not good enough.Women should step outside their comfort zones.

4. Women sometimes lack confidence to match their competence.
Comment on the statement.

Women are gifted with so many talents and abilities. But circumstances
pose certain constraints in their lives. They do not realize their talents.
Sometimes at home, sometimes at school, at other times at workplace,
women are bound by so many limitations. Right from their childhood, they
are chained. They suffocate under the heavy pressure of don’ts. This blocks
the free flow of their powers. Women are actually strong and tough. More
than men, they are capable of multi tasking. They are competent enough to
lead and take up responsibilities. But most of the times, they stay back.
They hesitate to take up responsibilities. It is their diffidence which pulls
them back. It is high time they realized their innate potentials. Then only
women can contribute their due to the nation building process.

Even though we are at the stage of total modernisation and what not, gender equality, gender roles and discrimination remains a sensitive talk. In a conventional front, women are expected to take care of her family, serve and obey her husband, take care of her children as if these are her divine duties. Men are always considered to be at authority, the one who leads in a relationship, and this itself is a huge no-no. A relationship no matter what it is, be it a marriage, a frienship, or anything for that matter- should be based on mutual trust and respect- from the realisation that no one is inferior to the other. Unfortunately that isn't the case.

Women empowerment must start within a family. When a girl sees her mother work for her

dream, it encourages the kid to do so too. When a boy witnesses it he learns to respect dreams of other people, to view women equal to him.. It is told that a woman wears her heart on her sleeves, that she is emotionally vulnerable, so what? A human becomes strong when they embrace all their vulnerabilities.

It is important to recognize the fact that before being a wife and mother, a women is a person of her own, she has dreams and she a mind of her own. You cannot except her obey everything that our misogynic society throws at her. Afterall all human minds work the same. But, still there are women who are trapped in this unreasonable beliefe of “womanhood is motherhood”, and if by chance she is not able to acheive it she is considered to be useless.

There is nothing wrong about women being homemakers. But it is absolutely unacceptable

when she is forced throw away her own life, job and dreams for sake of being a wife. 

Women can also provide for her family, and men too can be homemakers, well we have instances too. There are also families in which both the partners are from working class. And as much as I dispise the idea of potraying women inferior, men are also subjected to the toxicity of traditional masculinity, but that is a talk of its own.
