Miss Jopesmith-the Huntress of Cheltonsham

Miss Jopesmith is a completely different character with a lot of negative traits. She is a thrusting person .She is over thirty. She dresses up in a dashing style to look younger. The doctor calls her a snob and the huntress of Cheltonsham. She thinks that she belongs to a superior group of human beings. She lives a luxurious life. She is making fun of people like Hasan whenever possible. She is happy to blame others .She does not  mingle with  the less fortunate human beings like Hasan. She is unaware of the  great qualities  of hard work and dedication of common people like Hasan has .Thatb is why she makes fun of Hasan .She calls Hasan an absurdly comic creature. This Hasan is the noblest human being on the ship according to Dr.Cronin.From this we see that Miss Jopesmith is  prejudiced against  common people who appear not so handsome or elegant. We don't want to mingle with common man. We don't try to mingle with people or  understand their problems and abilities. Instead we live in our delux suites and pass our cruel remarks.Miss  Jope Smith is a symbol of  the soulless elite people in our society who are generally prejudiced against the common people.

The writer - The Price of Flowers

The writer - THE NARRATOR OF The Price of Flowers

P. K. MUKHOPADHYAYA-A Kind and Compassionate Person.

The Price of Flowers” is a story written by P.K Mukhopadhyay. This story portrays the life of a young poor girl named Alice Margaret Clifford(Maggie) who was far away from her brother Frank who lives far away in India. Gupta was an Indian living in London. Once he met Alice in a vegetarian restaurant. She was also called Maggie . She was working as typist in a nearby office. Her mother made cakes to sell them on Saturdays. She was from a poor family. She wanted to know if Gupta was an Indian. Her brother Frank had gone to India as he was a soldier in the military service. Gupta once went to Maggie’s house to meet her mother. Her mother was anxious to know about India because she had heard that India was a dangerous place to live in. She believed that most of the Indians had the rare power to see a person living in a distant land by gazing at a crystal ring. Maggie and her mother wanted him to look into the crystal ring and say how Frank was. Gupta told them that he did not possess such a power. One day Gupta received news that Maggie’ s mother was not well. He went to their house immediately. Maggie wanted him to gaze into the crystal and say whether Frank was safe. Gupta took the ring and told a lie that Frank was safe. Maggie’s mother was happy and soon became well. Later Gupta was shocked to learn that Frank had died in the war. Gupta felt very sad. Then in the morning of his last day in London, Maggie came to see him. At that time he was packing up things. She gave him a shilling to buy flowers and place them on her brother’s grave in India.

Gupta plays a very important role in the story. He is kind and compassionate. He is very polite and honest. He says that he does not see anything  There is a curiosity in him to understand how people lived and faced the problems of life.He does not believe in the superstition of crystal gazing. He loves his motherland India and takes great care to explain that India is not just a land of snakes ,tigers and diseases. He always wants to be truthful in life. But he was compelled to tell a lie by Maggie. He tells the lie because he thinks that it might improve the health of the old widow. Here we can see Mr. Gupta as a friendly character ,ready to adjust to the needs of others. He is keen on observing people. He could realise that Maggie's love and respect for her brother was priceless.

12.In other words,  women ( can be /can not be )  compared to matchboxes.

Now try writing a paragraph using the sentences you have written
*********************************************************************************
OPTION 1

The comparison between a woman and a matchbox.

A  matchbox is an essential thing. It can set anything on fire .Still we don't feel worried about its danger. We can keep it safe everywhere even in our pockets. It is a fact that no one takes a matchbox as a serious thing  or as a precious  asset. The same is the case with the Indian women at present. They have the fire of protest burning inside them. But their protest is not heard everywhere.Their family members are not worried about them.No one is going to take them seriously even if they express their anger. There is a common feeling that women can be kept quiet without much effort.(This is what happens with Nomita ). In other words,  women can be  compared to matchboxes.
********************************************************************************
OPTION 2

How does the author substantiate the comparison between a woman and a matchbox? (SHORT ANSWER)

Women have enough gunpowder to set a hundred Lankas aflame.Yet they sit around meek and innocent. The woman will remain just as a commodity, like a matchbox.Every one can exploit her  without any fear if they wanted to.That is why women are compared to matchboxes.
************************************************************************
An exercise to familiarise these ideas.

1. Do women have enough gunpowder to set a hundred Lankas aflame.?
An :  Yes,-----------------------------------------------------------
         No,-------------------------------------------------------------

2. How do  they sit around ? meek and innocent./ annoyed and rebellious.
