THE WRECK OF THE TITANIC
The poem, “The Wreck of the Titanic” written by Benjamin Peck Keith is about the tragedy of the ship Titanic.There were two thousand and one hundred passengers on board. It collided with an ice berg and sank into the sea. Only a few passengers -most of the women and children were saved.All the others including the captain and the crew died.the captain and the crew did not try to save their own life.Instead they gave preference to women and children .The poet is praising the nobility of the captain and the crew.He asked the crew to be patriotic. He helped the women and children get into the life boats. The ship band was playing the song ‘Nearer My God to Thee’ as they all went down .The poet compares this incident to the patriotic actions of Trafalgar, Alamo, Waterloo, the Light Brigade and Jim Bludso. It gives insights about disaster management and patriotism .

“Gooseberries”
Anton Checkhov’s story “Gooseberries” presents two brothers of completely different nature. They are Ivan Ivanitch and Nicholai Ivanitch.They follow happiness in life in different ways.The elder Ivan was a veterinary doctor.He is interested in visiting places and enjoying life. The younger Nicholai was a government servant. Nicholai seems happy with the kind life he was leading. But Ivan is not happy with life .Happiness in life is the theme of the story.
“To sleep”
William Wordsworth’s poem “To sleep” describes a common experience of human beings,sleep. He says how important it is to have a sound sleep for mental and physical well-being. The poet is trying to get a sound sleep.He was unable to sleep for three continuous nights.He is praying to sleep to bless him .
GOING OUT FOR A WALK
In the essay ”Going out for a walk” , Max Beerbohm points out that walking is not a productive exercise.Especially if one is accompanied by a talkative person.This is against the common notion that walking out is good for our health.

The lesson “Cyber Space” by Esther Dyson deals with the wonderful world of internet. Human mind always tries to explore new fields of knowledge . Cyber space is a new fields of knowledge. Now even children knows about it.The author compares cyber space to a real estate world.It is not easy to regulate cyberspace. We must choose useful sites only and show responsibility while using the cyberspace.

This is humorous essay the author Andrew Sullivan discusses the ‘i-Pod generation’ of today. The young people are totally disconnected from the society around them. The author talks about his experience when he was in New York. He could see the ‘i-Pod people ‘ with little white wires on their body. They are lost in the magic world of music.The author explains how their own life is trapped in the world.We should regulate the use of mobile phones and find time to interact with others.
“Conceptual Fruit” by Thaisa Frank
“Conceptual Fruit” is a good short story which tells the story of Greta, a mentally challenged girl of
sixteen.The writer Thaisa Frank talks about the possibilities of technology to help such differently- abled people. In this story the author writes about a family and the daughter who has difficulties to understand and do things. We can see the efforts of a caring father who tries to make life comfortable for his daughter.He helps her to make sense of the world around her with the help of technology. Her father shows her a site which allows her to create a house of her own.but soon she feels bored of the acticity when she realises that it is not areal world.Finally she leaves the unreal world of computer and leaves it. The story ends with an optimistic outlook. The loving father hopes about a better future for his differently- abled daughter.
