Greta , a Different Child Helped by the Cyberworld !

THE CHARACTER OF GRETA IN CONCEPTUAL FRUIT
(with provisions for self learning)

Greta , a Different Child Helped by the Cyberworld !

Greta is a differently abled child with blonde hair and blue eyes .She is slow in speaking and writing. She often repeats what she heard. She does not know how to ask questions. She could not tie her shoes well even when she was eleven. Now she is going to a special school. She is in the 5th grade though she is sixteen years old.Her family is anxious about her .It is a relief for her father to find out that  she is interested in computers. Soon she learns to type words like peaches correctly but slowly.her father becomes hopeful that she might get a job related to type writing  in future. Her father tells his family  about a new site .Only Greta shows interest .He trains her how she could make  streets and houses with bowls of fruit placed inside them .He asks her what she wanted to make. she tells him that she would like to make a street .He creates a street  and calls it “Greta’s Street”. Then they make  a house called “Greta’s House” .Then she places bowls in every room and fills them with peaches everywhere . Greta expects real peaches to appear .She weeps when she finds them not real. Her father slowly convinces her  that what she sees on computer  can not be real. Greta learns the fact and goes on creating things in the cyber world.  She  created a kitchen, a dining room, a living room, a bedroom, a room for cat – Greta declares that they don't need a bathroom . It is not a real house .It is clear that Greta is not an idiot. She is growing up ! This  thought makes her father happy. She smiles the next time when the word peaches appeared . It means that she has lost her interest.Father tries to keep her interest saying that the house could have anything – peaches ,pears and apples. She is wise enough to know that the peaches she see on the computer was not real. And that they don't need a bath room in a virtual house ! Father tries hard to keep her interested in the virtual world but she slips away easily like any normal child. Here we can see that the cyber wold helps Greta learn  certain things and feel happy for a certain period. As the story ends her mother is cutting blackberries and Greta is sliding away from the chair to help her mother. She has grown up a lot  !

Improvement help series 2019

Q :"Then Jovis nudges me; he fears to frighten his happy, quiet passengers, for he knows full well that a storm is pursuing us", says Maupassant. Here we see the trait of an ideal leader in the captain. What other traits of the captain, as a good team leader, do you find in the story, 'The Trip of Le Horla'? Sketch the character of captain Jovis in about sixty words. ( March 2017 )

Captain Jovis -a  Brave and Jovial Team Leader
(with SELF LEARNING TOOLS exclusive for this blog)

Captain Jovis from the story The Trip of Le Horla is a very brave and pleasant team leader. He is always ready to take calculated risks. He has excellent communication skills . His orders are crisp and short. This is evident from the letter he wrote to the writer informing about the departure of the hot air balloon . He was with the  team right from the preparations of the journey till the happy but jerky landing. He works along with his attendants to make it a safe journey. He takes care of every activity during the trip.  He is a strict disciplinarian and every one obeys his instructions. He listens to the words of his assistant Mallet at the same time he allows his officers to command whenever it is necessary. As the travellers in the balloon enjoys the trip ,the captain remains jovial but watchful and cool .He gives them good company as they speed fast in the balloon .When the writer gets alarmed by the hush and  speed  of the wind ,the captain nudges him and says that what they hear is the sound of a waterfall .He does not want to frighten his crew though he knew that they were trapped in a storm and the balloon would crash at any moment. This is the trait of an ideal leader .He shows great presence of mind .He does not allow panic to control his thoughts. He kept waiting to reach  a safe place for favorable landing .Then he gives prompt orders to open the escape valve. He does not forget to give proper warning to the riders who jump that they should take care of their heads while jumping down .He gets the help of his officers like Mallet in managing the disaster well. In the end of the story we see the travellers like Maupassant feel  thankful to the captain for providing such a wonderful experience . It can be  said without doubt that  Captain Jovis played a vital role in making the trip look like a comfortable pleasure trip.

Hasan,a Noble Soul.

 11 improvement help series 2019

( A character sketch of Hasan, the Seranag of Ranaganji )

                                                 Hasan,a Noble Soul.
Hasan in the story 'The Seranag of Ranaganji' was a normal person like anyone else. But he is treated as an ugly man and vulgar creature by the social promoters of the ship like Miss Jope-Smith. She makes fun of him without trying to understand his potentials and other good virtues. The story of Hasan ,  has proved us that we can never judge a man by his looks. Hasan was the only assistant provided to the doctor by the Captain. The doctor was doubtful whether they could handle the situation well.but Hasan helped the doctor  silently but efficiently to manage the disaster. When many people in the ship were affected with small pox, Hasan showed no reluctance in taking care of them. He never panicked. He served the people not for any economic profit. He considered it as his duty as a human being to save the people at the time of danger. He didn’t think that he would get the same disease. It was he who took initiative to prepare a shelter for the poor patients on the after deck. He was satisfied with the way he was. He was completely detached from the usual hope of reward. He had courage, self control and faith as his wealth. We will be wondering when we see him sewing the shrouds for the dead people. He himself read aloud a short passage from the Ramayana before their bodies. This shows his respect for other faiths and religions. In this present world, we all are satisfied with the profits and economic benefits. It is at this juncture, Hasan stands different. We all are getting blinded by the evils of the world. It’s high time to open our eyes from selfishness. The social promoters like Miss Jope-Smith failed to realize that it was Hasan who saved them from getting affected by small pox. There are so many fashionable people like this. They will never do anything for the good of the society. They are really hypocrites who fail to realize any good in their fellow-beings.

A character study of Ivan and Nicholai in GOOSE BERRIES

 A  character study of Ivan-GOOSEBERRIES

Ivan did not have  any interest in  gooseberry bushes like his brother Nicholai. He also did not believe in limiting one's desire for happiness.Ivan says "six feet of land " is for the corpse and not for a man. He needs much more. He also loved country life as he lived there as a child, but his love for it was not as passionate as his brother's.  Ivan used to feel hurt seeing his brother like this and he used to give him money to go away for a holiday. But he would put that money also in the bank.Contentment is an overwhelming power. The happy man feels he is happy. The unhappy man bears his burden in silence. According to Ivan freedom is a boon, as essential as the air we breathe. Freedom should be instant and not something that comes after a long wait.  Ivan found it difficult to live in town after visiting his brother because the peace and quite of the town oppressed him. He did not dare to look in at the windows because to him nothing was more dreadful to see than the sight of a happy family, sitting round at table, having tea. ivan always lived in the present and found time to enjoy the pleasures of life  .At Alokhine's house, Ivan responded to the rain by plunging into the water with a splash. He swarm about in the rain, flapping his arms, and sending waves back. He swam out to the middle of the pool and dived, trying to reach the bottom. He shouted with glee and said how delicious it was.He went on enjoying the pleasure of swimming and kept people waiting for him.But the pleasures and luxuries make him moody and thoughtful later. when he finishes the story about his brother and his pursuit of happiness,Ivan feels uneasy about himself. He was an old man now and he was not good for the struggle. Ivan asks forgiveness from God. He realizes that his previous attitude was wrong.

A  character study of Nicholai- GOOSEBERRIES
Nicholai's  dream was to live in the country, eating out in the open air, sleeping in the sun and sitting for hours together on a seat by the gate and gazing at the fields and the forest. He
wanted to sit on the veranda drinking tea and watching his ducklings swim in the pond, and
everything smelling good. His dream house always had a gooseberry bush in it. To achieve his goal, Nicholai lived meagerly. He never had enough to eat or drink. He dressed almost like a beggar. He always saved the money and put it into the bank. He was terribly stingy. Ivan used to feel hurt seeing his brother like this and he used to give him money to go away for a holiday. But he would put that money also in the bank. Nicholai had to buy an estate quite different from what he had dreamt of. But he did not grieve much.
Nicholai looked after his soul and did good works pompously. The good works included
curing the peasants of all kinds of diseases with soda and castor-oil. On his birthday he would
have a thanksgiving service held in the middle of the village. He would treat the peasants to half
a bucket of vodka. He thought it was the right thing to do. The gooseberries were unripe and sour, but Nicholai found them delicious. The gooseberries were unripe and sour, but Nicholai found them delicious because they were his own gooseberries. Even the ugliest child would look most beautiful to its mother. Nicholai was happy with his life. His dearest dream had come true. He had attained his
goal in life. He had got what he wanted. He was pleased with his destiny and with himself. We
see him laughing with joy looking at his first gooseberries. When he looked at them there were
tears of joy in his eyes.

A COMPARISON OF NICHOLAI AND IVAN
Checkhov’s story presents two brothers of entirely different nature. The elder Ivan was
a veterinary surgeon. The younger Nicholai was a government servant. Ivan was happy with the
kind of life he was leading. But Nicholai always dreamt of a peaceful life in the country. He
would always dream of eating out in the open air and of sleeping in the sun and sitting for long
hours gazing at the forest. The life of the two brothers is presented in sharp contrast. Nicholai realizes his dream. He manages to own an estate with a gooseberry bush. His life is one of great satisfaction. But ivan never sympathized with the desire to shut himself up in one’s own farm. The two brothers spent their childhood on an estate. They spent their days and nights in the fields and the woods, minding their horses and fishing.Later the estate was sold off to pay their father’s debts.
A  character study of ALOKHIN- GOOSEBERRIES

Aliokhin was leading the life of a farmer. He was a man of forty, tall, stout with long
hair. He was more like a professor or a painter than a farmer. When Ivan reached his residence,
Aliokhin’s boots were covered with mud and straw. At the time we see him first he was wearing a grimy white short and rope belt, and pants instead of trousers. His nose and eyes were black with dust.  He was leading a leisurely life. He has a sense of satisfaction as he had realized his dreams. He

was no longer be tired official, but a real landowner and a person of importance. Still Aliokhin couldn’t bathe regularly despite having a good bathing shed because he had
no time.Happiness felt by Alokhin does not look like happiness for any one of his friends.

Maggie - A girl with the gift of the gab

( A CHARACTER STUDY OF  MAGGIE ,THE GIRL IN THE STORY THE PRICE OF FLOWERS ;11 UNIT 2)
Note To teachers : PLEASE refer to our earlier post to get the lesson plan for this output.click here

People might resort to negative behaviour when they become victims of poverty.Begging ,stealing, sand mining , drug trafficking , bootlegging ,smuggling and alcoholism have their roots in poverty .In the story " The Price of Flowers " we have Maggie as a sterling example of a character who stood against the negative effects of destitution. She does not resort to any negative methods to overcome poverty .Instead Maggie is  facing life courageously .She works hard every day to help her mother in making both ends meet.Maggie is a symbol of dedication ,love and politeness. Maggie tells the writer ,Mr.Gupta that she is anxious to grow up as early as possible. Then she could help mother more because she would  be paid high. When asked whether she liked her job , she points out that her present job is rather mechanical. She would like the job which would excite her mind and brain, some thing like that of a secretary. This shows that she has a plan for her future. She is hopeful ,intelligent and ambitious. She believes that she could find her lost brother,Frank  if a yogi from India  looked through the magic ring. From this it is clear that she is worried about her brother. She is innocent and rather superstitious but her love towards her family is compelling her to behave like fool. When she plays   'scotland blues ' in violin ,the writer is astonished by her music abilities as well as her humility. There is a hope that  their financial status would improve one day  and then she would be sent  to take music classes. Maggie , along with her mother  is always hopeful that things would change for a better state one day. And to bring about that change she knows one has to take an effort. She uses the power of  words effectively to change the mind of the writer too.She told the writer honestly that she was doubtful about the power of the magic ring. But it would make her mother feel comfortable if the writer gazed through the ring and told a lie that he could find her brother alive. These tactical words make the write gaze through the ring ,tell a lie and that makes her poor old mother feel relaxed .Here we find a girl with the gift of the gab !In fact she is presented as a person who is able to communicate with others effectively and change the minds of people. Her polite approach helps her to get in touch with a stranger like the writer from India. Towards the final part of the story we find that she is giving up the shilling she had earned after a day's hard work to buy flowers .She is a proud and polite human being  who always showers her  love and affection towards her family.

The doctor of The Serang of Ranaganji

The Doctor of The Serang of Ranaganji ( 11 improvement files )

The Doctor of The Serang of Ranaganji is young and experienced is but always duty bound. He is
a bit shy and frightened in the beginning .He is  very efficient in identifying the epidemics and
follows the logical steps of disaster management .He informs the captain about the disease.
The captain gives instructions to keep the news suppressed and honestly tells that he is short staffed. He can not provide anyone to assist him except Hasan. He orders the doctor to do everything to contain the disease. The doc was stunned by the words of the captain but Hasan takes the lead .He helps the doctor in every way to contain the disease.Together they dedicate themselves to help the patients .When the elite people on the ship were making merry , the doctor and Hasan were  forsaking all physical comforts to keep a vigil on the patients. The doctor is never making fun of Hasan and disapproves the way the elite treat the common man.He is a symbol of compassion and dedication. He respects Hasan and his attitude. He is never making fun of Hasan like Miss Jopesmith does. The doctor does not like the the comments of Jopesmith. He says that Hasan is the noblest human being on the ship .From this it is clear that the doctor gives importance to the principles and values in life . We can see the doctor changing his attitude towards life influenced by the words of Hasan." What use is money ,Doctor Sahib,to one who has all needs.I am well enough the way I am."Hearing these words, the doctor feels ashamed of his passion for wealth and fame.
He also begins to think  like Hasan that money and rewards are not the important things in life. Thus we can see that the doctor is a great human being.

Hasan-a Real Human Being

Hasan-a  Real  Human  Being

Hasan ,the Serang of Ranaganji is a gem of a human being.Though he is not so good to look at,he has got a beautiful soul.He is an experience sailor who knows the importance of teamwork and unity. He takes the responsiblity of looking after the patients on the ship.He builds the shelter alone, provides them food and spends sleepless nights serving them and even praying for them.He is not afraid of anything ,even death. No one is waiting for him on the shore . He does not have  great desires left in life.Making money is not his aim in life."After all what is money for ,Sir." is the reply the doctor received when he suggested better pay for Hasan in return of his great service. He becomes a pillar of support and solace to the inexperienced doctor who also toils to help the people in the ship.Together they manage the disaster effectively, reducing the number of deaths and containing the disease.Only a few - the captain, the doctor and the serang- knew about the  epidemic while all the other passengers are left to enjoy the fun and frolic of the voyage.Being unaware of the dedicated service of the Serang, an elite passenger  makes a remark at Hasan, hinting that he looked like an animal. The doctor let them know that it was because of  this real human being that they are alive on the ship.

Stop phubbing , read and digest - newsdigestckr 19/06/2019

Stop phubbing * , read and digest  ( ckr 19/06/2019 )

Dear friends, Today is readers' day. June 19.The day when P N Panicker , the founder of Kerla Grandhashaala Sangham( An organisation of public libraries in Kerala ) passed away is observed as reading day in Kerala. Various programmes underlining the importance of reading is being observed in campuses and public spaces all over Kerala today.

Why do we give so much importance to reading ?

Because reading maketh a human being perfect as Francis Bacon, the famous essayist  once pointed out.
"Reading maketh a full man, conference a ready man and writing an exact man."
This is the exact statement of Bacon on reading.
He gives importance to reading. After reading ,things should be digested and the reader should form an opinion of her / his own  on the subject and should present it in a discussion and get it acknowledged by other readers .
After reading and getting his view point acknowledged by the contemporary readers ,she /he should write on the topic as writing will  make you an exact human being according to Francis Bacon.

Friends, Reading can change you a lot.Reading keeps you alive.Reading can keep you away from bad thoughts.bad habits. away from drugs, away from alcohol. Reading takes you away from gloominess.Away from despair and depression. From boredom.INTO HAPPINESS .INTO WISDOM.INTO ENLIGHTENMENT.INTO THE BLISS OF SOLITUDE.

What do you do when you feel bored AFTER a class ? Well, during my college days I used to spend a lot of time in the libraries. Especially when I feel disinterested in attending a particular class( Now most of us get ourselves glued to  a T V screen and go on changing the channels ! When we feel bored again, we get engaged on the phone.Phubbing is the result. You are interested only on the messages and are trying to send other people around you away-that is phubbing. Stop phubbing please.). And in a library what would I read  ? I would read the day's news papers. In Malayalam first ,the  Indian express next ( and how many of you read these news papers now ..? ) The Hindu next. The Competition Success Review, the Out look. The Readers' Digest. The Mathrubhumi. The Kalalakaumudi and so on in Malayalam. Sahithya Varaphalam was my favourite article I used to read and digest. It was a  feature written by the then well known critic in Malayalam  , M Krishnan Nair  in Kalakaumudi every week highlighting and criticising the stories and books published at that time. It had been a yardstick for new readers like me to evaluate literature  . It was Krishnan Nair who led me to great books and writers like Dostoevsky. It was "sahithya varaphalam" a weekly analysis of literature " and the library at Nirmalagiri College ,my Alma mater , which took me to the arena of world literature and the possibilities of English language.

Let me come back to the topic .Yes.In a library you can read many books and useful periodicals like  the Employment News.Periodicals , magazines.A good library will always provide you chances for better reading. You read about different perspectives  possible. You agree with them silently. You disagree with some of them furiously. You feel that you should at least make the author know that you have a different idea about it, so you decide to write about the topic. Soon you may feel that you don't have much arsenal to prove your point. You are convinced that you should read more about it .So you go to the librarian and request for a membership, peruse certain books on the topic and then you start writing. In a library I -the teacher of English- have grown up, in the libraries many a scholars have grown up.Many thinkers. Many politicians. Many social activists. Ask our favourite poet Sugathakumari .Ask our  beloved writer M T Vasudevan Nair .Ask Dr.Jineshkumar Eramam. Ask Anupriya, the young poet from Payyannur , ask Dr Bhaskaran Nair .They would say they groomed themselves out of reading. Mohandas once happened to read the book of essays "Unto this Last" by Ruskin Bond. The rest is history.Mahatma Gandhi was born. If you read the life stories of great people , you can see how a book change their lives. They have groomed themselves out of  libraries.Let me pay tribute to  Mr. P N Panicker and like minded leaders of the organisation  who dedicated all their lives to ensure that there is a library in every village in Kerala.

Dear friends, Reading makes you happy. You get news about employment opportunities .Reading entertains you. When the bishop in the Les Miserables stuns the policeman with the reply that he had given the candles to the man as he was his bother you feel stunned by the possibilities of human virtues. Reading makes you inspired. Reading gives you dreams. As our former president  APJ KALAM rightly stated,Dreams get transformed to thoughts, thoughts get transformed into actions. That why Malayalam poet Kunhunni once said "vaychail valarum ,vayichillel valayum".If you read, you will be able to  grow.If you don't read ,you will be ruined.

Dear friends,Reading can change you.It is a fact.Reading can help in changing your society. India, our motherland needs you. There are epidemics. There are health issues. There is poverty and unemployment in many places. Reading may help you in finding solutions. There is scarcity of Water in many places .There are environmental issues affecting the growth of our Nation .The future of our world is threatened by climate change. There is a need for immediate action to stop climate change. Children are out in the street in some  countries like UK demanding stringent measures to stop climate change.Give our future back is their slogan .How can we help them. ?  Pope Francis has read about this issue seriously and he has declared climate emergency in the world. But how many of us take this seriously ? Are we reading these issues creatively ? or are we just skimming and skipping when it comes to grave issues facing the world ? When I wrote a  post in F B and whatsapp  on the marriage function of a relative, hundreds of my friends liked the post. When I posted the statement by Papa on climate emergency,do you know what happened ? Only one reader cared to comment on it.This  is the grave situation we face . We all read, but don't read positively.but are we reading positively ?

We all read, we  all change or would like to change. But to what direction you would change ? Even terrorists read a lot. There are stories of criminals who devise new methods after reading about them or watching films. So reading is not enough. What you digest after reading is what counts .what we digest is really important. The schools and our teachers play a great role in helping us to select the books we should read and digest the ideas so as to develop a positive mindset. This is where discussions after a reading a book  becomes a serious activity. This is where the ideas you digested after reading get scrutinized, get evaluated, get acknowledged by your friends , teachers and other readers who always focus on the creative and positive aspect of reading.Discussions after reading is a must. Programmes like reviewing a book become meaningful in this aspect. The Readers' Forum in Alakode is conducting many a session this week for reviews and discussions on different books. This is a great work.Congrats to all organisations like them who are engaged in the cultural transition of Kerala.
let me thank Mr.sreekumar who gave me chance to speak to you.,the students of GHSS MATHIL,the future generation of Kannur. Let me congratulate the teachers , the schools , the librarians of this land who make it a point that reading goes on ,that reading is creative through programmes like this.Let me wish these programmes all the best.
"reading maketh a full man, conference a ready man and writing an exact man."
I would suggest a slight change in the first part.Reading maketh nice citizens.Citizens who do not ask for what the country can do for them but who will do what they can do for the country.

-Thank you.
