QUALITIES OF A GOOD CITIZEN

QUALITIES OF A GOOD CITIZEN ( 11 improvement files ) / Ideal citizen

A GOOD CITIZEN must  be patient, honest, truthful, dependable and humble as suggested by Rudyard Kipling. He may have to face criticism, opposition, lies, and hatred. When others blame him, he should not lose his confidence. One must  dream, but one should not make dreams one’s master.
He might face unexpected problems in life  just like Stephen Hawking had to.Then he should not be disappointed.Instead he should try to brave the problems with courage confidence ,hard work and determination.
He should always try to be a unique personality as Dr. APJ Kalam has pointed out.He should take support from his parents , friends and teachers to be successful in life.
He /she should realise the healing power of nature / and try to live in harmony with nature.Whenever he is  surrounded by the sorrows of life he might go to the woods and hills and feel  relaxed. A relaxed life will make him keep healthy.
He should try to do  good things in  life and understand that Death levels everyone in this world. Our glories are just  shadows.Only our good actions will be remembered for ever.
A good citizen must practise what he speaks. He should realise the power of words. He should learn from the life of great people like Gandhiji. He must learn to use words to change the society,
An ideal citizen must have  excellent leadership qualities to keep the people united and poised .He should be  energetic ,confident and convincing ,like a powerful current of fresh air. He should try to be a leader of the people.
He might pursue happiness in his own way like Ivan or Nicholai  but he should always introspect and make sure that he is not stingy ,foolish and selfish while pursuing happiness.
A responsible citizen must  use cyberspace for positive things in life ensuring live and vibrant social relationships.

The Beauty of Nicholai's Estate

The fresh smell of gooseberry orchards can be felt here in this time of early morning. You can see the leisurely movements of the sheep out there in the farm. The melodious songs of the birds chirping is heard. There is a vast lake in the middle. The sound of the lake water lashing at the shore adds to the music. The bees are murmuring. The breeze is warm. The clouds hang low over the fields.it seems like it is going to rain. The sun is rising on the hilltop. It is a beautiful sight.

Wayanad -a Beautiful Tourist Center

Wayanad is a good , silent tourist destination. What  they say about Kerala -"Gods own country", looks to be true about  Wayanad also. Wayanad is the combination of Hill Stations, Forests, Tracks, Water Falls, Lake, Caves, tea states etc. The drive to Wayanad and within Wayanad is a pleasure.

As north Kerala is famous for its Hospitality so is Wayanad. The local crowd is also very hospitable and tries to help you in every possible way.

We have visited places like Meenmutty waterfalls, sunrise valley, Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, Edakkal Caves.

Wayanad is one of the beautiful places I have visited in Kerala, India. The place is known for natural beauty. We had a visit to Wayanad last week, which turned to be one of the most memorable trips I have made. Visit to Edakkal caves was truly adventurous one and I would recommend it for anyone whois interested in adventure. Evening spent at Kuruva islands was awesome. We were able to enjoy the natural beauty, wild life, flora and fauna and the cool breeze of hill resort.
We also visited Tholpetty wildlife sanctuary and Muthanga wildlife sanctuary which are well known wild life sanctuaries of Wayanad. We could see lot of elephants, peacocks, beers, monkeys, various types of birds and butterflies and many more. It was really a wonderful experience for us. We were able to get tribal food also which was very delicious. We also visited Pookod lake, which is one of the must-see places where we enjoyed the pleasure of boating. Wayanad is one of the most beautiful places where nature has blessed a lot.

B.  The methods  ( the strategy ) used by Gandhi

spoke to the people using simple but strong words in English and Hindi.- gave importance to truth, non violence and simplicity in public life .

i)  He told the people that the peaceful  action must be two-fold- challenging the British rule ; fighting  against our own social issues - which involved raising the depressed, solving minority issues, ending untouchability
ii)  identified the main props of British rule –fear, prestige, cooperation of the people and vested interests and worked against them
iii) taught Fearlessness and the importance of being truthful in public life
iv)  peaceful non-cooperation(ahimsa ),giving up British titles, simple life
v )  he sent the leaders to the villages and stay there to understand the miseries of the farmers

Methods of Gandhiji
He also suggested that the method   ( the strategy )must be of  peaceful non-cooperation. In his opinion the peaceful  action must be two –fold - challenging the British  and fighting  against our own social issues- which involved raising the depressed, solving minority issues and  ending  the crime of untouchability. Gandhi   identified the main props of the British rule  as fear, prestige, cooperation of the people and vested interests .He decided to attack these foundations  through non violence (ahimsa ) .He taught the people to be fearless and the importance of being truthful in public life through campaigns like peaceful non-cooperation, giving up British titles and simple ways of living  . The leaders visiting the villages and staying there to understand the miseries of the farmers was a great learning experience to the freedom fighters.

( C ) Qualities of Gandhiji as a leader

i) highly energetic ,like a powerful current of fresh air, confident, convincing power, like a powerful beam of light piercing the darkness
iI)He used simple short but powerful speeches to change the minds of the people.

He practised what he preached.
iv ) a leader of the people, fascinated the masses, attracted them  like a magnet
v) made the people proud of their past, hopeful for the future and united in resisting the foreign rule
vi) effected a psychological revolution  among all kinds of people

vii) He respected all cultures  and religions and believed in democratic ways of life.
vii ) he believed that India lives in her villages and hence worked for rual development in India.

His excellent leadership qualities kept the people united and poised .He was amazingly energetic ,confident and convincing ,like a powerful current of fresh air. Gandhi was a leader of the people, fascinating them like a magnet does. He made the people proud of their past, hopeful of the future and got them united in resisting the foreign rule. Like a powerful beam of light piercing the darkness , this great leader effected a psychological revolution  among all kinds of people.

( D )  Vision for a  new India

i.) A prominent role for the poor in building the Nation
ii) India lives in her villages.( must give importance to rural development)
ii) Communities living in harmony
iii) No untouchability
iv) Not addicted to drinks and drugs
v) Equality for women

Disaster Management in India

Disaster Management in India ( 11 improvement files )

India is highly  prone to disasters like storms, floods ,drought and earthquakes. Many people die  and  property, buildings and the infrastructure  get damaged  as a result of these disasters every year.this So we must think about effective disaster management in India.

Disaster management  means reducing the impact of a disaster .It involves forming  disaster management committees at various levels ,providing training in rescue work , giving warning ,evacuating, preparing for and  taking safety measures, analysing the impact of the disaster, providing help to the affected and rehabilitating the people.

Death , damage and destruction is the net result of any disaster. There will be psychological problems too.We must also give importance to psychological rehabilitation .it is a very important part of disaster management.

Poor quality of the building structure is the major cause of deaths in many of the disasters. There should be an efficient system to monitor the construction activities  The U N D A C along with the government of India , has jointly prepared an action plan for monitoring the construction activities in  places vulnerable to earthquakes.

There are disaster management committees formed  in the national level and the state level .At the national level , we have  the crisis management committee headed by the cabinet secretary and the secretaries of the major departments of the government. At the state level , there is a state level  disaster management committee .It consists of the senior secretaries of various departments and the representatives of NGOs.The national level committee just facilitates the activities whereas the state level committee will be taking  the active role in disaster management. The central government will provide the necessary support to the states by providing defence services like airdropping ,rescuing, searching and providing medical support.

Rehabilitation is an integral part of disaster management.Special training  must be given to the rescue teams in the related skills. They need to be well equipped with the latest technologies. It is a fact that India has developed an effective system of disaster management at present.

Power of Words

The Power of Words ( 11 improvement files )
Words are powerful than swords. We have to be very careful in using our words. We must practise what we preach .Our words and deeds must be closely related. Then only people will believe us.

If people believe our words , we can change our world.Gandhi used his words effectively to change India.(details -summary of  Then Gandhi Came )

The story the Price of Flowers is another example showing the power of words.
Maggie compels the writer to help her and even tell a lie.
(details -summary of  the Price of Flowers )

Death the the Leveller is a combination of powerful words showing the truth of life. The poem says that everything dies out.Only our nice actions will be remembered(details -summary of  the poem "Death the Leveller" )

In the story the Serang of Ranaganji,we can see the doctor changing his attitude towards life influenced by the words of Hasan.
" What use is money ,Doctor Sahib,to one who has all needs.I am well enough the way I am."
Hearing these words, the doctor feels ashamed of his passion for wealth and fame.

Words can change our thoughts. Thoughts lead into actions. In this way words can change our world.

DISASTER MANAGEMENT - notes

DISASTERS IN A  GLOBAL  CONTEXT

Disasters  in different forms are  very common in the world now. They have both increased in frequency and intensity recently according to a recent report.Disasters like earthquakes, floods, landslides, droughts, accidents ,plane crashes and forest fires are common in developed countries and developing countries alike. Many people have  lost their lives and property in the devastating disasters like tornadoes, heat waves and floods in the  UK ,France and America recently. This shows that the advance of technology can not simply reduce the impact of disasters effectively. But it is a fact that disaster management is directly related to human development. The nation with better human development will be able to reduce the risks and damage due to disasters. The flood is the most common disasters all over the world but the drought is the deadliest.Asia is the continent most affected by disasters. India China and Bangaladesh are the most affected nations and hence it is high time we started effective disaster management.
