(1.)RICE  :
Comment on the satire and irony in the poem Rice.   Chemmanam Chacko  is a master satirist who uses his verse  to protest against the evils in the society. He always pokes fun at our own mistakes with his sharp lampoon.  The poem Rice is a good example for his attack on people’s vices.  The poet derides the farmers who switched their crop preference and thus brought out a devastating change in the culture, tradition, life style and more ...........click on the title for  more

Do you think that grandfather and Ratna were doing some tremendous social service? Explain.
Any personal type of little act of kindness can be considered social service because it helps the persons involved to make the society better. Nomita is the central character in the story Matchbox by Ashapurna Debi.  The story discusses the space of women in an Indian family through the presentation of an episode in the life of Nomita and her husband, Ajith. The Beauty of Sunrise

Describe the  beauty of sunrise upon the hills in your own words.(11 improvement files)

The sun is rising upon the hills. The sun looks like  a victorious Prince. We can see bright woods and sun clad vales. Soft gales are blowing. The river is flowing in valley  darkened by forest's shade. The woods are lovely dark and deep. The blue lake's silver beach is beautiful to watch.the sweet sound of the village bell is echoing from the hills. The wild horn is hooting  and the voice fills the woodland.Thin smoke is rising through the thick leaved branches. The landscape looks like a work of art.

DEATH THE LEVELLER:a powerful poem by James Shirely.

DEATH THE LEVELLER: It is a powerful poem by James Shirely. This poem reminds us that death is a force that haunts all human beings. It appeals to the reader to contemplate over their actions. Death levels everyone. He treats all alike. In the opening lines of the first stanza, the poet reminds us that the glories of war and triumph are offset by death. Both the Kings and peasants are reduced to dust. Thus death serves as a great leveler.
The rhyme scheme is set in the pattern of A-B-A-B-C-C-D-D. This pattern creates a rhythm. It gives more depth to the poem. Figure of speech: Personification: Death is personified here. Icy hand is a metaphor. Sceptre and crown stand for royalty(Metonymy): Victor-victim bleeds – (Oxymoron).Shirely reminds the readers that we are all mortals and we should perform good deeds in our life. I agree with the poet that it is only our good deeds that will remain for ever.

The glories of blood and state……against fate. These are the opening lines of the poem “Death the
Leveller”. The momentary nature of man’s achievement is the theme of the poem. This idea is very
common. There is nothing striking about it. Everybody knows it. But the poet makes it more vivid. There is no weapon to stop death. So we must be humble to accept the reality of life.
Only the actions of the just smell sweet and blossom in the dust:

The main idea in the poem is that glory and pride of men end up in grave. Death is a great leveler. The weak and the strong, the rich and the poor all must surrender to death. Every earthly achievement is short-lived. They are like shadows. People will remember only our good deeds and just actions. They are like flowers. By good smell, the poet means good thoughts.

1.Everybody has the chance

Everybody has the chance
To do a good deed
If you are driving near a school
Lower down your speed
Or maybe when you see the homeless
Give them a pound or two
Lower the sound on the T.V
If the elderly live near you
I am not saying that you must
Give away lungs or your heart
But remember it’s the smallest things
That play the biggest part

GOOD DEEDS

This World is a double edged knife
And we have only one life
Enjoy it, Live it well
In good company do dwell
Always do good deeds
Sow in yourself character's seeds
Cultivate mind with manure of thought
For ages, the experiences brought
Feed your life with good deeds
So that there is no place for weeds
To harm, that oft leads
The decay of character's seeds
The one who wants to succeed
He must always heed
And must seek
The good qualities
And not the quantities
A wise man can only pleads
But you have to pay heed
What are you needs?
Then decide what to do
And what not to do

Family Relationships as Portrayed in the Price of Flowers

Family Relationships as Portrayed in the Price of Flowers

The Price of Flowers” is a story written by P.K Mukhopadhyay which paints family relationships in bright colours. This story portrays the life of a young poor girl named Alice Margaret Clifford(Maggie) who was far away from her brother Frank who lives far away in India. Gupta was an Indian living in London. Once he met Alice in a vegetarian restaurant. She was also called Maggie . She was working as typist in a nearby office. Her mother made cakes to sell them on Saturdays. She was from a poor family. She wanted to know if Gupta was an Indian. Her brother Frank had gone to India as he was a soldier in the military service.

Gupta once went to Maggie’s house to meet her mother. Her mother was anxious to know about India because she had heard that India was a dangerous place to live in. She believed that most of the Indians had the rare power to see a person living in a distant land by gazing at a crystal ring. Maggie and her mother wanted him to look into the crystal ring and say how Frank was. Gupta told them that he did not possess such a power.

One day Gupta received news that Maggie’ s mother was not well. He went to their house immediately. Maggie wanted him to gaze into the crystal and say whether Frank was safe. Gupta took the ring and told a lie that Frank was safe. Maggie’s mother was happy and soon became well. Later Gupta was shocked to learn that Frank had died in the war. Gupta felt very sad. Then in the morning of his last day in London, Maggie came to see him. At that time he was packing up things. She gave him a shilling to buy flowers and place them on her brother’s grave in India.

The strong love and care Maggie showers towards her mother is of the highest order.Maggie's mother is a widow and is unhealthy .Still she  makes cakes and sells to take care of Maggie. Maggie compels the writer to tell a lie only because she wanted her mother recover soon. The story revolves round the crystal ring sent by Frank as a token of his love towards his mother and sister. The priceless flowers to be dedicated at Frank's grave sums up the deep love and respect the sister and mother had for Frank. The writer is surprised by the magical bond of love among the members of the family. When we analyse the family relationships in the story , we cant but say that life is beautiful here with the magical bond of selfless love.

LIVING IN HARMONY WITH NATURE ( based on textual essay and poems 11std )

LIVING IN HARMONY WITH NATURE ( based on textual essay and poems 11std )

THE POEM “TO SLEEP” BY William Wordsworth tells us the importance of having sound sleep in our life. The Poet is very confident that sleep will help us to remain mentally and physically fit. He wants sleep to visit him and bless him.The images of a flock of sheep leisurely passing one by one , the sound of rain ,bees murmuring, the fall of rivers ,smooth fields, white sheets of water  flashes through his mind as usual and he hopes to fall asleep  soon.Modern people are interested to do everything instantly. They want to have sleep instantly by swallowing sleeping pills. This poem is really an answer to the problems of the modern people. It tells us  that Nature is a friend , philosopher and guide.

Ivan Ivanich  of the story "Gooseberries"  is content  with travelling to places enjoying the beauty of Nature. He is living in harmony with Nature.

Watching the sunrise on the hills leaves a profound and soothing effect on the poet . The poem ends with a piece of advice to the readers. Whenever you are surrounded by the sorrows of life go to the woods and hills. Nature has everything in it to keep your heart joyful.

In countries like India the geographical area is less when compared to the higher population they have .There is stress on the natural resources .Nature is exploited in an  aggressive way and this has resulted in large scale disasters like floods ,landslides and air pollution. This also underlines the importance of living in harmony with Nature. It is also important to think about sustainable development while taking decisions on new industrial ventures.

SIMPLIFIED FORM OF THE ESSAY FOR SPECIAL LEARNERS :

How to get a good sleep at night

How to get a good sleep at night ( based on textual essay and poems ; 11 )

Sound sleep in a sound mind. And sound mind in a sound body. One can sleep soundly if one has peace of mind and a healthy body.

The poet Wordsworth has written a poem in which he  prays to sleep to bless him as he hasn't slept for two days. The poem tells us about the importance of having sound sleep in our life. The Poet is very confident that sleep will help us to remain mentally and physically fit. He wants sleep to visit him and bless him.Modern people are interested to do everything instantly. They want to have sleep instantly by swallowing sleeping pills. This poem is really an answer to the problems of the modern people.

Whenever you are surrounded by the sorrows of life go to the woods and hills. Nature has everything in it to keep your heart joyful.Nature has a healing effect which will help you to enjoy a sound sleep.

Physical exercises like walking are also important for sound sleep.Walking strengthens heart and reduces risk of heart disease and stroke. Walking helps lose weight as 75 calories of fat are burned by walking at 2 mph for 30 minutes.  Walking gives energy and a brisk walk is one of the best natural energizers around.Doing physical exercises also ensures sound sleep every day.

WAR CREATES WOES ,NOT HEROES

WAR CREATES WOES ,NOT HEROES (11improvement files )

There is no winner in a war.Every one will have to suffer. This is evident from the poem ‘DEATH THE LEVELLER’ by James Shirely. This poem reminds us that death is a force that haunts all human beings.  It makes the readers think about their short-life on earth. Death levels everyone in this world.Only our good actions will be remembered for ever.

The struggle of many a people to conquer or control the world is meaningless..They will have to die one day.Fate conquers them. The victor will also die one day. In a war,the feeling of victory is only temporary ,The victor and the victim will bleed to death one day.Our victories and achievements are not permanent. They are just shadows. Every one  will die .Scepters and crowns will come to dust along with the scythe and spade .

War does not solve any problem .It merely creates new ones.War creates so much loss even after it is over.People even go mad after a war.War is a traumatic experience.People are left without limbs or will not be able to walk again.War creates woes , not heroes.

INDIA LIVES IN HER VILLAGES

The major population of India lives in villages even now.IF WE WANT TO CHANGE INDIA,WE MUST FIRST CHANGE HER VILLAGES.Gandhi had recognised this fact during the times of freedom struggle. The first thing he did after reaching India was making a trip trying to understand the problems of the villagers all along the country. He saw their poverty ,unemployment and misery. He saw the discrimination based on religion ,caste creed and community. He realised the inequality women were subjected to.He knew about the problems caused by drug addiction. He found that the farmers in the villagers had to pay high taxes .The superstitions and social evils like dowry made life difficult for the people in the villages. He realised that It was the people of the villages who were the real victims of the foreign rule as well as the  social evils .That  why he began a two fold action for freedom as pointed out by Jawaharlal Nehru in the Discovery of India. The first was to resist the Britsh rule and the second was to fight the social evils in India. The fight was to begin from the villages.

Thus Gandhi and Nehru sent the young  volunteers of the freedom fight to the villages in India. That is how the freedom fighters came to know about  the poverty and misery in the villages. Thus they discovered that the freedom and growth of India depends up on the welfare of the thousands of villages in India. Rural development was recognised as the foundation of the economical development of India. The leaders came out with options like Gramaswaraj and the Khadi movement to boost the rural economy.Village life became a symbol of freedom and development. Lifestyle changed to simplicity and nobility in thoughts.

Even after attaining political freedom, the attempt to strengthen the rural economy continues but the problems still remain in many of the villages in India. There is poverty and misery in many places.Women are not given equality. They are still physically abused and disrespected.Dowry is still a problem in many families. There is discrimination based on caste and religion in many places. There is unemployment and starvation. There is scarcity of food ,water and clean air.Child labour goes on in many villages in our country .Many people are addicted to drugs. There are many health issues affecting mainly the children and women. If we want to develop India we must focus on the development of the villages,

Dr. AP J Kalam had dreamed of the PURA concept of villages to change economy of the villages with the help of technology..Efforts must go on to change the villages .Women empowerment programmes like Kudumabasrees must go on.Every village must be self reliant and developed. Support must be given to rural industries and agriculture.Projects like the National Rural Employment Generation Scheme must be continued.Awareness programmes must be conducted to stop drug addiction, superstitions and discriminations based on caste, creed and community.Efforts must be taken to strengthen scientific temper. Then only we can think of a developed India.

VERSION 2 ( INDIA LIVES IN HER VILLAGES )

IT WAS MAHATMA GANDHI  WHO told the people that he had a vision for a  new India with  a prominent role for the poor in building the Nation and with all the communities living in harmony. He realized that India lives in her villages and all developmental activities must begin from the village as a unit. He gave importance to rural development. He dreamed of an India where there would be no untouchability  and  people being not addicted to drinks and drugs. He also spoke for the equality for women and a fusion of religions. This vision kept the spirit of freedom aflame in every Indian.

The major population of India live in villages even now.IF WE WANT TO CHANGE INDIA,WE MUST FIRST CHANGE HER VILLAGES.Even after attaining political freedom, the attempt to strengthen the rural economy continues but the problems still remain in many of the villages in India. There is poverty and misery in many places.Women are not given equality. They are still physically abused and disrespected.Dowry is still a problem in many families. Role of computers , internet and social media in our life

Computers , internet  and social media in our life

Computers , internet  and social media have begun to play a very important role in our life.We have been transferred from the print space to the cyberspace. The cyberspace is the virtual world created by  computers ,internet and the social media. The cyberspace can always keep us connected to the whole world and at the same time disconnected from the outside world. It has a tremendous influence on our lives. The life of Julian Assange of Wikileaks and the result of the recent president election in America are fine examples for the importance of Cyberspace.

Cyberspace can be used for positive things in life .it can also be misused .There is no possibility of rules and regulations .The lesson “Cyber Space” by Esther Dyson deals with the wonderful world of cyber space. The writer talks about the attitudes of the present generation that likes new frontiers to explore. Human mind always tries to explore new fields of knowledge and cyber space is one among them. In olden days, only some people knew what cyber space was. Now it has become known even to children. The author compares cyber space to a real estate world. Anyone can own a space here according to his choice. Some places are more suitable for children. In real estate too we have parking area, shopping malls, red light zones, school area and playgrounds for children. That means people can choose where to go and what to see. Nobody controls us from outside but we control ourselves. There are e mail services, entertainment services and there are community groups. They are like shops in a real estate as restaurants or play grounds. Author Esther Dyson clearly says that cyber space liberates us from power structures and authority. It allows total freedom for the communities of any size to love it or leave it.  In short the writer agrees that cyber space is all about individual choice and individual responsibility. It has to grow further. There are no perfect answers or solution anywhere.

The social media also has its merits and demerits .In the humorous essay "is society dead ? "the author Andrew Sullivan discusses the  ‘i-Pod generation’ of today. He says that our generation is totally disconnected from the society around them. He depicts the picture of such impersonal and isolated world of human beings. The author talks about his experience when he was in New York. He talks about the ‘i-Pod people ‘ with little white wires on their body. They are lost in the magic world of music. The author explains how their own life is trapped in the world. More and more youngsters are becoming addicted to sophisticated electronic gadgets like ‘i-Pods’. Sullivan uses several examples and  evidences to support his argument. He sees New York city as a silent city. People walk through the streets in their Mp3 cocoon. They are confined into their little world. He says that such people miss the fun of making friends. The author concludes his article citing an incident from his life. Once he forgot to take his ‘i-Pod”. At that time he noticed the people around him. He found fun with the rhythms of people. He could hear the sound of air planes and the opinion of taxi drivers. He learned the most important lesson that the outside world has a sound track of its own.

Technology can be used to make life better for human beings.“Conceptual Fruit” is a  short story which tells the story of Greta, a mentally challenged girl of sixteen. The writer Thaisa Frank talks about the advantages of technology to help such differently- able people. In this story the author writes about a family and the daughter who has difficulties to understand and do things. We can see the efforts of a caring father who tries to make life comfortable for his daughter. He helps her to make sense of the world around her with the help of technology. How we use technology is really important.

In short it is a fact that that cyber space is all about individual choice and individual responsibility. It has to grow further. There are no perfect answers or solution anywhere.Being responsible citizens it is our duty to use cyberspace for positive things in life ensuring live and vibrant social relationships.

Importance of Religious Tolerance in India

WE must be tolerant. We must respect all religions. Our constitution allows our citizens to follow any religion. We must not insist any one to follow any particular religion. This is the concept of religious tolerance in India.

Gandhiji worked for religious tolerance in India.Gandhi said that we should give importance to the absolute truth. The absolute truth in life is that all of us are just human beings. No one should be discriminated on the basis of religion ,caste ,creed or community .Indian culture is a fusion of all cultures- Hindu, Islamic,Christian and all others. An Indian should listen to all ideas .

India is a land of many religions tolerant to each other. But now a days honour killings happen in a few places in India. HONOUR KILLING IS BAD .It is against religious harmony. It is against human rights. It is against the constitutional rights. It is a selfish and cruel act.

Tension and rivalry among religions will hinder the growth of our nation.Unity in diversity is and must be the way of life in India. Our constitution gives no importance for any particular religion. It defines India as a secular democracy. Religious tolerance is the essence of Indian culture.

A short article on rituals in your place

A short article on rituals in your place

Theyyam is a ritual dance in North Kerala. It is known as thira in South Malabar .They are performed by male artists. They wear exotic make ups and colourful costumes. The headgear and other ornamental decorations are spectacular in sheer size and appearance. Each theyyaam will have a seperate make up and dress. Thudangal’ (the beginning) and ‘Thottam’ (the invocation) are the introductory rituals of the Theyyam. They take a lot of time to get ready with the make up and dress. Then there will be thottampattu to invoke the god/ goddess into the perfomer. The thottam(song in the beginning) will be chants based on the myth behind the evolution of the theyyam .There will be a lot of devotees around the theyyam offering prayer with their folded hands. After the thottam ,theyyam will start performing thullal ,a dance with loud shrieks , fast runs and brief pauses in front of the deity and around the temple.During the brief pauses the devotees swarm around the theyyam and offer their prayers and gifts .Theyyam would receive the amount offered as gifts, talk to the devotee on various issues and  bless him/her a better future. This ritual will go on for many hours in front of the temple .Of the over 400 Theyyams performed, the most spectacular ones are those of Raktha Chamundi, Kari Chamundi, Muchilottu Bhagavathi, Wayanadu Kulaveni, Gulikan and Pottan. These are performed in front of shrines without stage or curtains, by persons belonging to the Vannan, Malayan and other related castes. Theyyam incorporates dance, mime and music and enshrines the rudiments of ancient tribal cultures which attached great importance to the worship of heroes and the spirits of ancestors. Karivalloor , Nileswaram, Kurumathoor, Parassini, Cherukunnu, Ezhom and Kunnathoorpadi in north Malabar are places where Theyyams are performed annually from December to April.

Cyber space- love or leave it

Cyber space is the world created by the Internet. It has a tremendous influence on our lives. The life of Julian Assange of Wikileaks and the result of the recent president election in America are fine examples for the importance of Cyberspace.Esther Dyson presents a deep study of the cyberspace.

He says that cyber space is a vast , boundless virtual real estate.
There is a general notion that some regulations are necessary in this space.Esther Dyson is against the idea.Censorship in cyberspace  is not practical .It is because the entry to cyberspace  is optional and  it is easy to by pass them.Self rule is the best rule in cyberspace. The users of cyberspace must show responsibility and self control.

Cyberspace is an attractive territory as it consists of three important arenas-private email conversations,  sources of entertainment and information  and possibilities of real communities. All these are self regulated.THEY DON'T NEED ANY RULES FROM AN OUTSIDE AGENCY

Cyberspace has a unique quality. It gives importance to individual freedom and choice. You can love it or leave it.But you can not insist on any rules or regulations.

There will be a formation of self contained communities in cyberspace which cater to the needs of the members  and do not interfere with others. The future of cyberspace will be marked with the evolution of new regulations on intellectual property, content and access control and free speech.

Finally Esther Dyson says that the society must grow up and respect the  freedom of the individual and the right to choose while using the cyberspace. However it is important  to focus on certain Do's and Don'ts while using the internet.

1.Do not reveal your email address to any one.

2. Do not waste your time in visiting unwanted sites.
3. .....

NOMITA'S MOTHER

--example of a woman who is not empowered .
....belongs to a poor family and hence she always keeps complaining about the miseries in her life.
....had married her daughter,Nomita to a rich family hoping that her daughter would be treated as a queen there.
.....but she did not get much help from Ajit ,her son in law.
.....her present problem is that her house needs immediate repairs .

.....does not know about the problems Nomita face in her husband's house

.....has a habit of requesting financial help from her son in law.
.....unaware of the hatred and disrespect Ajit has towards her.
......wrote a  letter requesting finance for repairing her house .
This is the provocation for the present quarrel between Ajit and Nomita.
Ajit calls Nomita's mother a beggar and a shameless creature .These words irritates Nomita .
That is s why she hissing like snake and dares to burn her sari.

Nomita"s mother needs financial support and empowerment. Nomita should visit her mother now and then  and find time to listen to her mother's problems .At the same time  Nomita's mother  should abstain from begging for financial help from others .

He might face unexpected problems in life  just like Stephen Hawking had to.Then he should not be disappointed.Instead he should try to brave the problems with courage confidence ,hard work and determination.
He should always try to be a unique personality as Dr. APJ Kalam has pointed out.He should take support from his parents , friends and teachers to be successful in life.
He /she should realise the healing power of nature / and try to live in harmony with nature.Whenever he is  surrounded by the sorrows of life he might go to the woods and hills and feel  relaxed. A relaxed life will make him keep healthy.
He should try to do  good things in  life and understand that Death levels everyone in this world. Our glories are just  shadows.Only our good actions will be remembered for ever.
A good citizen must practise what he speaks. He should realise the power of words. He should learn from the life of great people like Gandhiji. He must learn to use words to change the society,
An ideal citizen must have  excellent leadership qualities to keep the people united and poised .He should be  energetic ,confident and convincing ,like a powerful current of fresh air. He should try to be a leader of the people.
He might pursue happiness in his own way like Ivan or Nicholai  but he should always introspect and make sure that he is not stingy ,foolish and selfish while pursuing happiness.
A responsible citizen must  use cyberspace for positive things in life ensuring live and vibrant social relationships.
